Is the Shelby GT worth it?
This has been mentioned before in other threads...when compared to a Mustang GT, the Shelby GT looks/is expensive for what you get.
But when you compare it to aftermarket tuners:
Roush Stage 2: 300 hp for $39,950 http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showpo...7&postcount=52
Saleen S281: 330 hp for $43,711 http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showpo...7&postcount=52
Foose Stallion: 335 hp for ~$45,000 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-...QQcmdZViewItem
Steeda Q335/Club Racer: 335 hp for ~$39,000 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-...QQcmdZViewItem
It seems more reasonable.

Correct me if I've missed the boat on this, but I thought Shelby was an aftermarket tuner. Like Saleen, Steeda etc. If this true, then include them in the comparison; "apples to apples" as they say.

The company has partnered with Ford Motor Company to build the Shelby GT
Ford gives the Shelby GT Ford Media releases
http://media.ford.com/article_displa...ticle_id=26180
and give the SGT it's own separate entry for Ford Product Information (look just above Ford Taurus) http://media.ford.com/article_displa...ticle_id=26355
Another difference is that Ford specifically made an order code, the 54U GT upfitter's package, for future Shelby modifications. I'm unaware of Ford doing the same for Steeda, Saleen, Roush, or Foose.
I don't necessarily disagree but a difference between the SGT and the others is that because of the Shelby/Ford partnership http://media.ford.com/article_displa...ticle_id=25937

I don't know if I can answer your question about where it fits in the "Ford chain", but from this press release, it seems that Ford considers the Shelby GT to be a Ford product, part of its "Steed for every need", and a Ford/Shelby collaboration.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 13, 2006 – Today, Ford debuts the all-new 2007 Ford Shelby GT through a behind-the-scenes look at the high-performance Mustang’s development on its “Bold Moves: The Future of Ford” web-based documentary (FordBoldMoves.com). On Wednesday, Ford confirmed production of the Shelby GT as one of 9 new product introductions coming in the next 6 months for Ford and Lincoln Mercury.
“Our goal is to offer a steed for every need,” says John Felice, Ford brand general marketing manager. “The new Shelby GT is a low-volume, extremely collectable Mustang for enthusiasts. It also offers a few more customers the opportunity to experience firsthand magic of Mustang and Carroll Shelby.”
The Shelby GT is the third modern Shelby Mustang produced through a collaboration of Ford and Shelby Automobiles
I'd say that's a fine answer. Thanks!
