You should take one for a test drive, you'd be more than pleased. Plus you thought you got attention in a regular GT, drive a SHELBY and see what you get. Take it from someone who had a 05 and now has an SGT.
Overall I am happy with my purchase and glad I didn't wait for the Bullitt as an SE. The car is great, but I think they could have improved the hp.

Were they asking the if the GT350 was worth it back in the sixties? That's basically what the Shelby GT is today, the modern day equivalent of the GT350. The Shelby GT has pretty much the same modifications that the GT350 had.

The GT350 price was about 61% higher than a K-code Mustang in 1965. The Shelby GT is about 38K not counting dealer rape charges. That's about 36% higher than a $28K GT...

 

Not to mention loaded GT's cost a lot more then 28k.

 

I agree with "that which makes you happy was worth it", unless you really just couldn't afford it in the first place. I really want an SGT, but I'm having a hard time justifying the price to myself. (I'm really kind of a tight-wad) If I could find a slightly used one, I'd probably trade my 05 GT in on it in a heartbeat, and I love my GT. I get plenty of stares already, and other people often think my car is a Shelby. I always correct them. It's just a mildly Shelby-looking Mustang, which isn't the same to me. I want a real one! Then again I want a Superformance Cobra, too. I guess it's good to want things...

 

Is it worth it to me? No. The vista blue ones are nice though.

All I will say is that if you want a shelby, the SGT is the one to own.

The GT500 will never be a shelby to me. Ford SVT built a car, put some badges on it, handed the keys to shelby and asked his approval. Whoopie!! Nice car, but not a shelby IMO, and 400lbs overweight in all the wrong places, with not enough suspension changes compared to the GT.

I don't feel bad when a new "normal" vette eats my mustang. It costs more, etc, etc.

But as much as I like mustangs, it would gripe me that the vette is still a GT500 eater. Literally.

With respect to the Shelby GT, it would have been special if Carroll Shelby would have had enough influence to be granted a 5.4 then there could possibly have been waiting lines instead of sitting on dealer lots at invoice.

 

I think the only downfall to the car is 0 advertising. 95% of the conversations about them in the showroom involve explaining what it is. We don't have any Mustang GT's with rebates in stock. And you would be surprised how many GT's simply sell at sticker, probably 1 in 50 sell to someone who has ever been on a Mustang forum.

 

For those of you who are not older than dirt, a lot of shady stuff went on with magazine test cars in the 60's. Remember, they all had simple points ignitions, carbs and no such thing as a check engine light if the tune was tweaked. Engineers (Bud Moore, Smokey Yunick, Roger Penske, etc) would show up for testing with a car they worked on all night, so that they would post impressive numbers for the rags. Shelby himslef had one 289 cobra prototype to do his magazine tests with, and the car was painted a different color for each one.

 

For $45k, it better have north of 400hp, a fair bit above 400. They look nice etc, but for that money it has to walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

I won't argue with anyone that there is no '64 1/2 Mustang. My college roomate bought a Mustang after winter semester of '64. He had several thousand miles on it by the start of Fall term which was the usual release date for new models. Even Brad Barnett lists the 64 1/2 and then disclaims it in the timeline. So I've alway been of the faction that believed since it was a mid year introduction it was a 64 1/2.

It would be a couple of years later before I could afford a '65 coupe which turned out to be a K-code. Wore it out driving to and from both base and college so I sold it in the early 70s for a '68 Camaro with a lot less miles on it. So 30 odd years later I get my second Mustang and it is head and shoulders above any pony car I've had before.

The 8K markup for the SGT is about the same markup we saw back in the 60s for the GT-350s. I just can't stand the 15K dealer add on at my local dealer.

Even small dealerships got in to the act. Hot Rod magazine a few years back admitted that they knew most of the cars they were getting had thinner head gaskets, shaved heads and a few other things to give the cars more power for the magazine tests.

Our dealer here wanted $10k over, then a few weeks later only $5k over. I told him he needed to come under sticker, and he immediately perked up and said he'd sell it for sticker, no problem. He said the "market" was a matter of "perception". I waited for him to get even more desperate, but he finally sold it. I think it parks where I work now, and I'm jealous everytime I see it, but I don't know what it sold for. Buy one or watch it park next to you and wish it was yours...

If your local dealer insists on $45k or even $40k for an SGT, just find another one. This idea that they can't be had for sticker or slightly under is bogus. I don't know if that converts any GT enthusiasts or not, but it helps to put things in perspective. Not everyone can afford or even find a GT 500, but if you want a ready-made modded GT with some extras, there's the justification for the price, right between a $29k GT and a $42k GT 500.

LOL Silverback this car was not for padding the dealer pockets. The GT500 is doing that. The SGT can be had at $500 over invoice. What irks me most about the car and hence my response yesterday is the MISINFORMATION out there. As Kevin said the explaining on this car in the showrook is ridiculous. When I bought mine I called over 50 dealers. Long story but my dealer who ordered mine tried the bend over game and I told him Im trying to quit. So anyway I called and called. And it was so ridiculous I had to have arguements with meatheads on the phone over what the car is called and what it had for goodies, etc. Ford has done an absolutely terrible job marketing the SGT. I dont know why but they have. So unfortunately alot of people get hearsay for info and its generally wrong. The car LOADED is $40400. That is with the Shaker not the nav. Also you can now add heated seats. And that is the 07 price. So I dont know why the 45 gets tossed around. I know the dealer has that price on it but that isnt MSRP. And if you really want one theer is a dealer in Ga who is selling them at $500 over invoice. He is a great guy and frequents the SAI forums. He has been very helpful to those who havent bought from him as well, like me. He works at Wayne Morris Ford and his name is Michael Morris. He has a few left from 07's and I dont know what he has coming for 08's besides Afblue's car. But for those who dont thinik it is worth it, stop in and look at one. Perhaps take it for a drive. You will be surprised. But at the very least get the correct info on price and options and stop spreading the wrong info.

 

Go elsewhere if you are in the market for a SGT. No one that does even a little research should pay that much. My local dealer wanted $5K over MSRP. I went elsewhere (to a Georgia dealer).

6 SGTs for below $40K. And these are the "buy it now" prices. It's not that hard to get a 2007 SGT for less than that. I know of one SGT in central Iowa that they are selling for less than $37K (Mustang GT invoice + $8390). Dealer I bought from sold/is selling seven 2007 SGTs for $500 over invoice (same dealer Webba mentioned above).

Not unless its got the SAI installed Paxton supercharger. Then you will have a +400hp SGT. $37K for the SGT +$6400 for the Paxton installed. Tada! 448rwhp
