2007 Shelby GT should I buy it?

Interested in buying a 2007 Shelby gt with 30000 miles on it. It’s white with silver stripes. This has always been a dream car for me. I bought 3 regular mustangs 2005 for me and my 2 daughters. I traded mine a month ago and regret it. Dealer wouldn’t let me buy it back. Long story! I’m car less now. This one is $30000. I am a granny with 3 grand babies and don’t drive much. I know, grannies don’t drive shelbys but I’ve always wanted one. My goal is to leave something of value for my youngest grand baby. The other two, their parents can buy what they want when ready. The car has been in Florida. I’m trying to get pictures of the underside for rust. How much rust should be expected? My 2005s were so reliable. Are the 2007s as good. Just trying to make an informed decision. It will not be driven a lot and will be garage kept in Mississippi. They want $30000 for it. Thanks for any input.

That could be a really nice car, but $30K seems way high to me on the price. Pre-pandemic it probably would have been under $20K.

Just to make sure -- it is a Shelby GT, not a GT500, correct?

Yes a GT. Here’s the info from the website

All the GT's performance hardware is the same as that on the GT-H. Which means a Ford Racing Powerpack, consisting of a 90mm cold-air intake system and more aggressive calibration of the engine management system, mandating the use of premium fuel. Ford Racing performance mufflers and an X-pipe, replacing the standard H-shaped crossover, complete the powertrain mods. Although output was originally estimated at 325 horsepower, Ford has since recertified the package at 319 horses and 330 pound-feet of torque. Underneath, Ford Racing provides new struts and shocks, which reduce the ride height about an inch and a half. Stiffer anti-roll bars improve body control and make for flatter cornering. And a race-inspired twin-tube strut tower base increases chassis rigidity in the engine bay and sharpens up steering response. This beautiful white 2007 Ford Shelby GT has the “Performance White" exterior with the classy Gray leather interior. Other options include: Power Steering , Power Brakes, Power Locks, Power Seats, Power Windows, Driver Airbag, Passenger Airbag, Cruise Control, Air Conditioning and more!

Now I understand the reason for the 30k price tag.. It's being sold thru Gateway Classic Cars and not thru a private owner.. Keep in mind that when going thru a classic car dealer, they make their money by charging a consignment fee to the current owner.. This means in order to make a profit, the owner agrees to allow Gateway to list the vehicle above what is fair market valve.. If the vehicle doesn't sell after a period of time, the current owner can choose either to lower the asking price and make less of a profit, wait around until it sells at the current price listing or cancel altogether and attempt to sell the vehicle privately..

That being said, I would have someone you trust go through the vehicle thoroughly with a fine tooth comb. If everything checks out to your satisfaction, I would then begin negotiating starting at 18k but don't agree upon anything over 28k.. Meanwhile, wish you the very best of luck and welcome aboard

I neglected to say earlier: welcome to the forum!

Following up on m05's comments above: you could also keep looking, for a similar car sold directly by private owner, and maybe get a much better deal on it

Yes indeed, you can always keep searching for a similar vehicle being sold directly by a private owner just as Bert brought up and get a much better deal in the process

Ok. Thanks so much for the input. Where is the best place to find on by owner. I got burned on camaro 2012 with 64000 miles on it. It was rusted on the underside and made the dealer take it back. I’m a little gun shy and I think I would have to travel to get one. My 2005 was such a great car but how do I know if a private seller is being honest. Thanks so much for the advice.

I found a 2006 Roush GT. It has 54000 miles on it. It’s a stage 3. No individual modifications just like it was bought. 3 owners but owners were car buffs so it’s in great condition. He wants 20;000. Does this sound about right?

It is really hard to judge the market and prices lately, but that one sounds more reasonable to me, price-wise.

Keep in mind, it is a Roush modified car; should be a good performer with the supercharger, a lot more powerful than the base GT or the Shelby GT. I think this car is somewhere just over 400 HP.

The "Shelby" name probably caries more value, but the Roush modifications are definitely higher performance.

Regarding buying a used car, from a private seller or a dealer: I guess a dealer is a little safer, since they have to offer a warranty. However a dealer can be untrustworthy, just like a private seller . . . the only difference is that the dealer is a professional liar, the private seller is an amateur. Either way, you can take it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection, which is a good idea. If the seller doesn't want to let you do that, that is a bad sign.

Ok. Thanks so much for the info. I really don’t need the extra horsepower but I want something unique to pass down. I really like the Shelby but just don’t want to pay more than I should. Let’s hope it’s a good one when I look at it.

The Shelby is the lowest price I could find with low miles also. I wish I could find a cheaper one!

All I can say is this.. If you have a family member, a friend or a neighbor who is either mechanically inclined or knows someone that is? Perhaps they can put you in contact with that person who can look over the vehicle your interested in purchasing or they can refer you to somebody that runs a reputable auto repair shop who can look over the vehicle with you.. I also agree with Bert's recommendation in regards if the seller is not willing to have the vehicle pre-inspected by a mechanic of your choosing? this is indeed a red flag in my honest opinion and I would therefore walk away and look elsewhere

Another thought, is that used car prices are crazy high these days; "what goes up must come down" but it's hard to say when that will happen. I don't know how much time you have but if you can be patient, prices might come down a bit.

I realize I'm late to the conversation but I bought a minty 2007 Shelby GT in Summer 2021 and looked everywhere for a 100% original, well cared-for example. Many were trading in the $18K-$25K range but with at/over 100K miles and noticeable wear & tear. The pristine versions were $30K+. I managed to find a cream puff (2nd owner, 29K original miles) for only $25K and bought it after one test drive (car was never in the rain). I have owned a long list of cool S197's (2006 Hertz, 2007 Saleen Parnelli Jones 302, 2009 Bullitt) and my son has a 2008 Saleen Dan Gurney. I think I like the Shelby GT as much or better because of its homage to the original GT350 and it was final assembled by Shelby American in Las Vegas (like the originals) while Carroll was still alive. I think they are hugely overlooked and overshadowed by the GT500.

It's like anything else in life -- you get what you pay for. By a $17K car and it's likely tired/worn. By a $25K car and you could end up with a "time capsul" like mine.

Including before & after images of my wheel swap (factory chrome which I did not like, then the American Racing Torque Thrust 2 custom made wheels to fit S197).
