Sylvania SilverStars for the GT/CS....

All, I've been waiting almost 2 years now for Sylvania to come out with the SilverStar headlights and foglights for the Mustang (I HATE that YELLOW beam of the stock bulbs - looks like the battery's low or something)....finally they are here. I just went to their website and found that they now have the "H13ST" for the headlights and the "9145ST" for Fog lights...has anyone installed them yet?? I had SilverStars in my Lincoln LS and really liked them...much whiter light - but no extra heat / wattage!!

Are there any issues with it getting hot enough to burn or haze the lens covers?

Not really - same wattage - just a different coating on the bulb.....and they are much whiter looking and are 20% brighter than stock halo bulbs....

I see they have them for an 06, any issues with putting them in an 07. Other than them being listed on the lamp replacement guide I can't find any prices or anyone who sells them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Chilli - I'm heading to AutoZone tomorrrow to see what's up - I couldn't find them - except at Sylvania's web site....they may be new and not everywhere yet.

IIRC - they were somewhere between $30.00 and $50.00 a pair....

I have the Silverstars for my fogs sitting on my workbench. Need to get them installed ASAP. Autozone has them.

They weren't cheep - $24.95 a whack. Since I have HIDs I am hoping that the Silverstar fogs will complement them better than the yellow, yellow stock lights.

Will install them probably tomorrow and report back with pix.

Just curious - are your fog light bulbs the SilverStar 9145ST's? I want to stay the same bulb/wattage so I don't fog up the lenses...have done that before by installing higher wattage fog lights in past vehicles. Also, did you notice if AutoZone had the H13ST SilverStar headlights in yet?

thx

I know what you mean about "yellow" lights....when Ford went with the new lower profile (shorter) H13 bulb in '05 the light is much yellower - doesn't appear very bright at all. My F-150 has the same bulbs and I'd upgrade it as well.

They rock!
Hey Burke - please do me a favor and confirm that they are the "9145ST" bulb....cause you can get other SilverStar bulbs (higher wattage) in the fog lamps - but they will eventually create a fog on the inside of the fog lamp lense....thanks!!

OK - here's the story so far.....the H13ST (SilverStar Headlight bulb) is listed on the Sylvania web site and I checked with AutoZone and they do have it listed as part of their inventory....but can't order it yet....must mean that it is not yet available? I have a message into Sylvania and will let you know of their response.....the 9145ST (SilverStar) is available for our fog lights and is in stock at AutoZone.

I'm going to wait until the headlights are ready though as the diff in color/brightness is significant and wouldn't look right mixed with the dim looking stock yellow headlight bulbs.

Thumbs down

OK, the mod is done, and the verdict is in!

The Silverstars I installed were the 9145ST type, purchased at Autozone for $19.99 each.

Verdict: This is the most worthless mod I have had the misfortune to waste money on. There is a SLIGHT (and I emphasize SLIGHT) difference in lighting, trending away from the buttery yellow lighting of the stock bulbs, but even side by side (one fog with the Silverstar, and one with stock lighting) you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. And by NO means does it even come CLOSE to "HID" color lighting as proudly trumpeted on the package.

The evidence:

From left to right - Photo one shows the Silverstars that I installed. Photo 2 shows stock fogs (with Saleen HID headlights). Photo 3 shows one Silverstar and one stock fog (HIDs on for reference) Guess which one is the stock bulb and which is the Silverstar? Give up? Silverstar is the passenger side. Photo 4 shows completed job.

The pix pretty much reflect reality as far as lighting color and quality go. I give this mod a supreme . Save your money.

Here's the update I received from Sylvania today:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your inquiry. Part
H13ST has not yet been released. We have received many requests for this
part in a SilverStar upgrade, but we were unable to begin developing
this part in a SilverStar upgrade until just recently. The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wrote into the original
specification for this part that the glass capsule portion of the lamp
must remain a clear quartz glass. Part of upgrading a part to SilverStar
is coating the capsule with an amethyst colored enamel. NHTSA had
specified that we could not do that to this part. We appealed this
standard through NHTSA, resulting in a change in the wording, allowing
us to finally offer a SilverStar upgrade for this part, but this part is
still under development. We are hoping to launch this part sometime in
the late fall to early winter timeframe. Shortly after the release of
this part, you should be able to find it at most large auto parts
stores. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any
other questions or require further assistance.

Hey I like those HID's look nice. Of course the SilverStars aren't going to look impressive next to an HID - or in the daylight for that matter - but in the dark next the a stock bulb - there is no comparison whatsoever -SilverStars are white - not yellow like the stock bulbs (not blue either like a wanna be HID)....at least that's been my experience on 3 of my past cars anyways....to each his own - I can't wait to get mine installed!

Thanks for the compliment Hotlap on the HIDs, I really appreciate it. After what you said I thought I would update on what the Silverstars look like after dark. I drove the 'Stang around a lot tonight (it's 1 AM now) so they have had ample opportunity to "shine" so to speak. So here goes!

Photo 1 is a night shot I took of the Saleen HIDs and stock fogs a year ago, right after I installed the Saleens. Photo 2 is a shot I took a couple of minutes ago in my driveway.

Believe me when I say I don't have an axe to grind about the Silverstars - after all, I paid over $40 for them and I also had them for years in my 2002 'Stang, but in this case I just do not see ANY difference in the lighting whatsoever. I am still of the opinion that I wasted my money on the Silverstars.

Like Hotlap says - it's personal preference but I am still of the opinion that this was a worthless mod and a waste of money. My review is still a resounding .

Tks.

YOU JUST SAVED ME SOME MONEY. That looks nothing like what they show on their site.

You're welcome and I'll be glad when HID's come standard on the Stang....IIRC KC was saying in '08?....anyway the SilverStars aren't going to hold a candle against HID's - and they are only 20% brighter than the stock bulb (running the same wattage as well so you don't overheat your lenses) - so you are not going to see a hugh difference in brightness - and I'm not sure how well a 20% increase would show up in pics. However I did notice they were brighter on both my '00GT and my '01 Lincoln LS Sport - but the major reason I like them is the whiter light than the stock (dim looking) yellowish bulbs - especially the new H13 bulbs - they are about the weakest looking Halogen bulbs I've seen in the newer cars...short of going with the HID's, the SilverStars were the best non-blue, stock wattage bulbs I could find and they were very reliable - I never had one burn out. Anyway thanks for the demo and when the H13ST's come out - I'll be the "guinea pig" and report back to everyone how they work.

Speaking of your HID's - did you install the complete conversion kit or the ones with just the low beam HID's (I just read an ad for those somewhere recently) and am not sure if that means you only do a partial conversion or what the deal is....back when I had my '01 LS they were quite expensive to convert to HID's - between $800 - $1200 IIRC....have the kits come down much since then?

thx -

PS - after going back and checking out your pics again - pic two looks like a freight train coming at ya.....that's a boatload of light - just curious - do you get hasseled over the HID's?
