KR Hood owners

Need some help guys...
A friend of mine has an '07 GT500 and just put a KR hood on the car. Ever since he put the KR hood on he has been having issues with the car running lean. He originally put a K&N filter on but took it off thinking that was the problem. He has taken the car to a local Ford dealer and some tuner from Long Island whom I dont know and they cant seem to fix the issue.
He tells me that the problem occurs on decelerate when you lift your foot off the gas, I guess its sucking too much air????

He also recently contacted a guy who told him to add a baffle to the intake portion of the hood to restrict some of the air...Does this work?

Any help would be appreciated.

can't help with your issue, but curious which KR hood? Was it the Shelby SS or Trufiber Venom? Asking because my plans include one of these in near future.

The MAF sensor in our cars is extremely sensitive to turbulent airflow. With the KR and SS hoods, a ton of air is forced into the engine compartment. IF the stock airbox is retained, this air, which is forced downward in the general area where the airbox resides, turbulence is not an issue. That's because the stock airbox's inlet is not directly pointed upwards. If an open air element filter is used, the air from the hood is "forced" onto the air filter. This generates sufficient turbulence within the air filter and downstream to the MAF. The surging associated with this phenomenon is normally observed during part throttle conditions. At WOT (open loop), the problem disappears.

It's not so much the amount of air that causes the surging but the velocity. To solve this problem, an air restrictor must be placed in the hood or a baffle of some sort on the air filter that impedes the direct airflow onto it. I had this same surging issue when I rigged up my brake duct bezels to force air under my oval K&N filter. A restrictor plate with holes solved my problem.

Glad to assist.

Guys, I have a lot of unique mods but hardly any pics. Stuff no one has thought of. Combining my total gearhead status, an engineering / math education and an ability to come up with unique concepts, I've come up with some unique stuff.

If I put my car in car shows (sorry, I don't), it would be one of those that guys would wonder, "How'd he do that?" or "Where'd he get that?".... Just so you don't wonder too much, here's only five I'll describe briefly:

1)
I have THREE 400-cfm intercooler heat exchanger fans. The center is controlled by the PCM. The outboard fans can be triggered by IC coolant temp or turned on manually.

2)
I have four dual function digital gauges in my center pod. Yes, eight digital readouts. I also have the LC-1 wideband gauge on an SOS single pod.

3)
I have installed a series of switches and indicator LEDs on my overhead console. Okay, one pic only.... Sorry, no description.

4)
A bank of fuses for various circuits I've installed. A second pic so you can see what I'm talking about.

5)
My hand-built parking lamp DRL module is seen in one of the pics. The black box contains a circuit board and relays.

FYI, I don't like to post information about my mods. Past experience doing so has proven they raise a lot of questions, i.e. PMs and e-mails and frankly, I just don't have the time to reply to everyone. So I don't do this any more. I apologize for hijacking this thread. Now, please, let's get back to the topic at hand.

It's the 1967 Shelby hood revisited. Obviously the design and field testing (if there was one) is not fully in sync with the car's dynamics.

Typical quality control Shelby issue.

Actually, you missed the point.

My reference was associated to the turbulance of the 1967 hood which appears you are not aware of. Designing and producing a hood for cosmetic looks and nostalgia is one thing, making sure it is without flaws on a car with different dynamics is another.

You're right. Never heard or read of a problem with the 67's having a problem with air turbulence. Please post your source. Thanks.

No offense guys but I dont care about the problems with the old hood, I am trying to find out a fix for the new hood.

Willie, in post #5 is spot on and gave you your answer. If you have a KR style hood and the resultant air flow is causing problems such as surging, etc., a baffle of some sort is in order.

*update* My buddy had his shop install a baffle and all the issues with running lean are history
