Why doesn't the 2011 V6 get the selectshift
Why doesn't the 2011 V6 get the selectshift
auto when the 2011 Edge gets it along with the paddle shifters. This is with the new 2011 Sport Edge with the 3.7L 305hp V6...the Edge gets it but the Mustang doesn't?

Edge doesn't have a manual transmission option. Maybe the Mustang product planners are purists on this issue and feel like if you want to choose your own gears you ought to buy a proper manual tranny. More likely though, they feel that the Mustang is about as expensive as the market will bear at this point and they don't want to add another thing that's going to increase the cost. Maybe they'll add it in another year when people have adjusted to the increased price of the 2011.
For those who want the 6 speed manual no biggy. However it would add to the sophistication to the V6 in a market in which this car will compete against 370Z's and such that will have this feature for the automatic.

Just get the manual. Paddle shifters are lame.

Paddle shifting is a toy (IMO) much like the 'seek' button on the radio. If you want a gear, go to it. I've driven the Carrera with the PDK and I don't think I would really use it much in real life.Obviously I will arouse the passions of people who love it but I don't live to please everybody.
I'm surprised there are no paddle shifters for the automatic on the Mustang . . . . that is a point in favor of the Camaro for folks who want the automatic but also want to shift it themselves every now and then
I have an auto for a DD and have absolutely no desire to shift the gears in it. It sucks horribly when you're stuck in stop and go traffic on icy roads five days a week. Besides, I have my notch when I feel the need to shift gears.
Selectshift or paddle-shifts are the most useless features on a car. I've had them on a BMW and on our Mazda and i've messed with the silly things maybe once or twice. It's fun for about 5 minutes and then, what's the point. Either or,auto or manual. If i've got a auto,i'm just going to enjoy the ride.

The times I used the manual. Hard acceleration: The engine and turbo in it ran out of steam just before 6000 RPM but the redline was much higher... so if you wanted a fast acceleration you needed to shift before the redline.
Or in traffic when I'm stuck in a line of slow cars and need to dart out into the faster moving lane. I could keep the tranny in 2nd till I was ready to go then I didn't have to wait for it to down shift.
But both of those were pretty rare. Still from a marketing standpoint it should have them, despite the fact that they'll probably never be used.
I've had all manual cars except for my Mazda CX-7. And the manual shifting was useful on occasion but for the most part I just left it in drive.

I think the Auto will be well-sorted out and ready to go. I think most people would be happy with what it will do, without the paddles. I ,also will be getting an auto. Much more versatile for all-around driving. Probably not the best choice for road races, but the only tracks in my area, are pretty much straight with one turn back at the end.
You guys that don't want to see the paddles in this car or don't care really don't understand what I am getting at. The issue is for Ford that almost isn't good enough for these cars anymore to compete against what the world has to offer. The V6 Mustang is going to compete against 370Z's and the like and these cars all offer this feature. I myself only drive manuals...my 08 BMW 328i sports is a 6spd. manual, my wifes 07 Focus ZX5 is a manual as is my Porsche 997S.
If we want Ford to compete and dominate they need to keep up with and pass what other companies are doing for similar amounts of money. Granted a 370Z is a couple of grand more than a Mustang V6 with an automatic but the 370Z offers a tad more content. This is an option that is already available with this tranny as well as engine combination. Why wouldn't Ford's version of a sports car have this feature? Like I said for me it is irrelevant..but for alot of buyers who have a lot of choices out there it may make a difference.

Does the Genisis have paddle shifters?

I believe it either a) does, or b) at least has a shifter +/- selector. The Mazda 3 auto has had a manual override since forever, same with the Tiburon auto and every VW Tiptronic for the last decade. It's just software and an extra notch in the shift gate for a shifter located override selector, and paddles wouldn't be much more. I don't get why Ford didn't include this. It doesn't make sense compared to the competition, and other sedans/SUVs in Ford's lineup with this engine/transmission combo to have paddles, when the Mustang is Ford's SPORTS car and doesn't have them.
The mustang isn't a sports car....
BS. It is compared to the rest of Ford's lineup. Which is why it gets compared to other sports/sporty coupe cars in the industry. Especially with the strides Ford is taking to make the car fair better against more sophisticated company, it is definitely more and more a sportscar.
And if that's your argument, well, the Fusion, Taurus, Edge, Flex, Super Duty, Focus, Explorer, Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda5, Volvo S40/70/80, Volvo V50/70/XC60/XC90, BMW 1/3/5/6/7-Series, Mercedes C/E/S-Class, VW Rabbit/Golf/GTi/Passat/Jetta and EVERY other freaken car in the last 15 years that has had a manual override auto transmission, aren't sportscars either.
Yes, the Edge/Focus/Explorer currently don't have a Select Shift option, but the 2011s all will.
Even if you want to make the argument that drag racers won't use the Select Shift, that is wholly untrue. How many bracket racers/hardcore drag racers switch over to a selectable shifter from B&M so they can have full control over the car??

Used generally, I guess the mustang can be considered a sports car. I was being specific though. The mustang is a pony/muscle car, and should always remain that way. I consider sports cars to be more something like a corvette or a porsche. Not an everyman's car like the mustang. (excluding the 55k GT500
)
