telescoping steering and better seats!! and while we're at it, better padding on the armrests and console.

Definitely, I like it except for the wheels, not a fan of the last Mach1 wheels at all.

IDK, there's just something about that hood that just doesn't look right. I don't think it looks that good on this body style. I would prefer something more like the 69/70 hood.

Just my $0.02.

Base 5.4 3V Cobra Jet at 375hp/350tq.
Opt. 5.4 4V Super Cobra Jet at 400hp/365tq.
6spd MTX (though a 5 spd might actually work better at the strip behind a big motor?)
5spd ATX (unless Ford comes up with a 6spd ATX by then)
SRA (yup, SRA, not the greatest thing elsewhere, but perfect for the strip)
3.73 LSD rear end (no, not hallucinogenic...) 4.11s would be nice, but CAFE may nix that, except for some "in the trunk" drag pack that can be installed in your driveway for "offroad use only" ;-)
Hurst shifter
While I wouldn't have a Shaker hood, ala the original (just doesn't make sense with the intake plumbing and you end up with a goofy lumpy, bumpy hood as in the most recent Mach I), I would have a "Shaker" engine/intake cover that protruds from the hood a touch as a modern nod to the original.
Very modern interpretations of the Magnum 500s.
Requisite chin and tail spoilers, but very modern interpretations, not simple-minded reproductions of the originals or generic like the current GT spoiler.
Requisite tape stripes, but again, a very modern interpretation, not some reproduction of the originals (I don't wear a mullet either for similar good reason).

The Mach I would essentially be a street and strip oriented drag racer type car with a big(ish), torquey motor and SRA combo that is perfect for that particular specialized performance environment. Styling would be a bit flashier with enough eye glitter and decorations that this crowd seems to expect. But keep it a fully modern interpretation, not some reproduction exercise.

This would, presumably, complement a much more road and track oriented Boss/GT350 type car, which would emphasize a broader and balanced overall performance envelope with a highwinding 4.6 4V, tight 6spd MTX, tight IRS based suspension, big brakes and more functional and refined yet commanding styling scheme.

Excellent description of what is needed in the next Mach I, rhumb!! A 5.4L or 6.2L engine is a must, the powerband would be broad and be tailored for the strip. Both a manual and automatic would be necessary along with the aforementioned "Drag Pack" option. I'd like to see Ford offer a lightweight package with the "Drag Pack" to keep the curb weight in check.

Frank, do have anymore info about this car? It looks like a Fang hood/shaker, but I didn't think they made a V6 version.

As for the hood, and obligatory hood scoop, I hope that it would not be a slavish reproduction of the original '69-'70 version, but rather a more modern interpretation.

To try to reproduce the early style hood, optimized for the intake configuration of a carburated car, to the current FI Stang will end up with the same, awkward "bump on a lump" design of the recent '04 Mach I hood. Stylistically, you end up with the automotive equivalent of the mullet hairdo.

Rather than trying to clumsily force the form to follow a function that hasn't been there in twenty years, i.e., a carburator, why not do a desing that, while harkining in broad stylistic themes to earlier designs, clearly reflects the hardware and architecture of today's Mustang.

My one suggestion would be to have a long tube, hi-rise manifold, which would presumably help low end punch, covered by something along the lines of the still born intake manifold cover, that protrudes slightly through a hood opening. While you get a design that reflects the "shaker" hood of yore, it is yet a completely modern design that also reflects the underlying mechanics of the car rather than trying to hide or circumvent them.

Again, my hope for the Mach I, and the Mustang in general, is a car that reflects the broad character and design idioms of the originals, but interpreted in fully modern ways rather than a slavish recreation of them.

While it is wise to remember and reflect upon the past as a guide to the present, it is folly to recreate and relive the past as an escape from the present.
