Went to the Orlando car show....

During Thanksgiving weekend, I went to the Orlando car show. They had a cutout V6 engine there, advertising it as the 3.7 V6 used in the Mustang. However, the oil pump/oil filter that was on it was vertical (oil filter). I walked over to the V6 Mustang that was on display, and it had the horizontal oil filter, as my 2011 does.

Could the cutout engine that was on display be the 3.5 V6 that is used in the trucks? I read somewhere that these two engines are basically the same.

I'm interested to see if that oil pump/filter from this cutaway engine would work on the 3.7, macking the oil filter change a bit less messy to replace (yes, I use all the tricks when changing the horizontal filter). Maybe that setup cannot work in the Mustang because it's too low to the ground and would expose the oil filter?

It may have been for the new V6. If you are annoyed with your current oil filter location I would suggest a sandwich plate on the current location and then run lines from that to a remote filter.

New V6, what new V6? The current V6 from 2011 to 2014 is carrying into the 2015 that I kew of. Am I wrong?

I had already thought of a filter relocation, along with an engine oil cooler arrangement.

My question was if the 3.5 and 3.7 are simular, and specifically in the area of the block and oil pump.

The 3.5 is the Ecoboost so it should have had turbo's on it, with the new cars they might have relocated the filter.

No turbos on the cutaway engine. It did have the partial plastic intake manifold runners on it as in the current V6. Only the oil pump/filter was different.

Agree with comment on sandwich plate and remote mounting the oil filter. Can pipe in an oil cooler and pressure/temp sensors if you are so inclined as well with that type of setup!

Nope. Not interested in doing that.

In looking at the 3.5 V6 Ford has, it also shows the oil filter being horizontal and not vertical in the engine display I saw. Perhaps this was an early design that is still being used for the shows.

I wonder if it was a mockup of the mythical 3.7L Cleveland engine that was never put into production....

It was rumored to be a 355hp twin turbo version of the 3.7L, but never went into production.

^^^That could have been it. The cutaway on display had no evidence of turbos, but that was the oil filter arrangement. No doubt Ford spent a few bucks on this engine display, so I'll guess they felt they needed to use it.

I did not see it on display last year though. Maybe someone tripped over it back in storage, and got it moved to the display rack.

Maybe they'll bring it back in 2015, as I don't see many V6's being bought or ordered when the turbo 4 cylinder puts out more HP and fuel economy then the current V6.

I 'hope' Ford might have changed the oil filter to be like the picture above for the 2015's? Sure would make oil changes less messy

No kidding. I would like to meet the people who designed and approved the horizontal filter and make them replace the filter on their own living room carpet.

You can get one of those form a funnel, or whatever it is called, to make a nice funnel that won't let the oil drip all over the place.

Thats what i use. Not one drop of oil anywhere but still a hassle to get the funnel shaped right. I've used it my last 3 oil changes and worth the $20 (if i remember right) i paid for it

A ziplock bag works great too. The filter position isn't that different from plenty of other cars and not that big a deal, IMO.

Being picky, it is a big deal. Having to use a baggy or a special funnel to keep from making a mess is avoidable IMO.

Especially when I saw a cut-a-way engine on display that had the 3.7 V6 oil filter vertical. Why didn't this make it into production?
