VMP Tune for Magnuson Supercharger!!! Finally!!!
#21
ok, update...
I called 2 places today. VMP and JDM
VMP: Spoke to Steve over there. Nice guy. Sounds like they started picking up some Magnuson work because of some stangs and F150's that have gone to them for tuning. So Justin started working on them. They've done a handful. They don't sell any intakes or pulleys for the Magnuson (they do for the Roush, obviously). So if I decide to go with an intake and pulley upgrade, I'd have to get those elsewhere, then do the datalogging and tweaking at that point.
Overall sounds good... but I get the impression that they're very busy, and I'm "one of their many customers". I'm sure I'd get decent service and quality of product there.
JDM: To be honest, I was shocked with my experience with a simple phonecall there. In a good way. I spoke to Jim Jr. there. What a great guy. Very friendly, very open... in the end, I felt like I (the customer) "mattered" to him. I'm not just one of thousands of customers that they deal with everyday. He was attentive, eager, and happy to answer my questions. So right off the bat, I was pleased.
Technically, I also liked what I heard. They have dealt with only a handful of Magnuson stangs, which is expected. However, they do have a copy of the Magnuson base tune already from previous cars, so I don't have to datalog my current setup. They can either set me up with a JDM tune with the stock kit intake and pulley, or they can wait till I get the intake and pulley, and they can write a new base tune with those 2 added mods. They have written tunes for other stangs like mine with the Maggie plus the intake and pulley, so they have a good reference that will be very close if not spot on. So I was pleased with that.
Best of all, apparently a Roush CAI (box only) will fit with NO mods needed. I will use the elbow I currently have, but the Roush CAI box should drop in the stock spot. So that's good to know. They sell the Roush CAI.
He is also going to look at a smaller pulley for me, and where to get it from.
So if I go with JDM, I have to decide if I go with a tune now, based on the stock Maggie setup for $350, then if I add mods later, it costs $50 to $100 to tweak the tune. Or wait till I add the intake and pulley mods, then tune. Hmmmmmmm.... thoughts?
I still have to contact Lund. I can't believe they have no phone #....
600 whp here I come...

I would recommend them entirely and the throttle response on their tunes is 2nd to none.

Alas this has been a common theme with VMP, i think they are getting to big to quick.
I say that you just wait for the new parts to get a tune, I can't imagine you will see a huge difference between the tune you have now and the JDM one, atleast not 350$ worth of a difference.
What size pulley is on there now?

The pulley I have on there now is 3.9, for about 6.5psi.
JDM is only 10 Mins away from me. Great Guys over there, Come in once and a while just to chat. I asked them about going for a tune for my car but they said that AED was a better deal and I should look there. They look out for you as a customer. I am going to get Dyno tuned by them once my mods are finished.

I'm really impressed with JDM. Like I said earlier, their customer service is refreshing. Thank you Jim (if you're reading) for getting back to me. I have to convince the wifey now again, to allow me to get that I am running out of Father's Day and birthday excuses to use LOL...
To Gabe and you (the5), thank you for recommending JDM. Sounds like they are a good place. I did research on that too...I like what I hear.
p.s. I am working with Magnuson directly to obtain that smaller pulley. They know me there (heck I'm on their website), so hopefully they can hook me up with a smaller pulley.

Update again:
So much for my thread title, lol. I decided to go with JDM.
Sold my oem Brembo wheels/tires, and getting ready to order:
JDM tune
3.6 pulley
shorter SC belt
Roush NA intake
delicious...

I know Justin and BJ personally and have always used VMP. But they are focused on their own TVS product especially with the launch of the Gen II blower. JDM is a good choice.

Thanks Sean! I was going to go with vmp, but with their unfamiliarity with magnuson, and the customer service I got with the phone, I felt more comfortable with jdm. Aside from gabe, I also read a few more folks have had nothing but great stuff to say about jdm.

Essentially yes the amount of boost you have determines how much power you put down, the greater the psi the greater the power. Turbo's can be adjusted on the fly where as superchargers can not. Want more boost? You need to get a new smaller pulley. In a way i think you can limit the boost through tunes for a Blower but thats the extent of my knowledge.

I wish I have a reputable trustworthy dyno close by. . But yes, I plan to datalog myself, then have jdm tweak if necessary, then dyno at some later point.
