Under Carriage Cover Thing

Was driving my 2014 GT last night and suddenly (and intermittently) at speeds anywhere from 50 mph on up, I got a noise that sounded like air pulsing in and out of something. Like a ShookShookShookShookShook sound (about 4-5 'Shooks' per second). At first I though I had a flat, though in hindsight, it wasn't really that same type of sound.

Fast forward...this morning I got underneath the car and saw that the plastic thing that covers the undercarriage (splash cover?) was badly cracked and starting to hang down on one side. I'm thinking it must have been that thing flapping in the wind that was making the noise.

So, what is this thing called, and what will it likely cost me to fix/replace it? Thanks!

I wouldn't think it should cost you anything to get it fixed, still under warranty.

Unless you left the screws out of it or didn't tighten them back up after an oil change.

Thanks. So what is the thing called, so I can describe it when I call the dealership?

If they determine it broke due to running something over, they might not fix it under warranty. Just saying, be prepared for that. And it'll probably look like something hit it, even if there was a defect.

A good dealer should probably replace it anyways, but I bet most would turn you away.

From the 2013 Mustang Owners Manual v3 - Page 229

Engine Shield

Some vehicles may be equipped with an aero-shield under the engine.
Remove the front fasteners of the shield to gain access for service. This includes oil and filter changes.

The Ford manual calls it the underbody shield.

I think that's a good name for it, because every time I get on it, it feels and looks like going to warp speed.

Hey VikeMan,

Welcome to the forum! My name is Deysha with Ford Service and I recommend you bring it in to your dealer and get it checked out. Also, PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number so I can escalate this to the customer service manager for your area if needed.

Deysha
