I actually meant to write flywheel instead of clutch, but I'm sure that wouldn't have changed your reaction...

 

Last time the Clutch went out in the 97 Powerstroke it got rid of the Dual mass, I guess one more reason to have the Automatic in my 2010.

 

Excuse me for my ignorance but do you have to change the flywheel when replacing the clutch?

 

It depends. The flywheel can become damaged by excessive heat from clutch slippage, or scored if the disk has worn through its friction material.

 

If it is a Dual-Mass type, then YES ... from what I understand none of the clutch components are servicable separately in a Dual-Mass set up ... it comes as one package and probably why it it $1400 for a V6. Us V6'ers will have to be kind to our clutches until the aftermarket has a chance to step in. If the V6 M/T Mustang becomes popular enough, less expencive old school single-mass replacements should become available in ther next few years.

If it is NOT Dual-Mass then usually NO. Typically worst case is you may need to have the flywheel re-surfaced, unless clutch is really fried it can damage a flywheel to the point of needing replacement.

I used to have a 1999 BMW 540i 6MT, and it had a "dual mass flywheel". What that meant was that you couldn't (even if you wanted to) resurface the flywheel when doing a clutch job. Instead, one had to replace the entire flywheel along with the clutch parts, which meant a parts cost of about $1200 to $1500, and a turn-key (including labor) cost of about $2000 +/- a couple hundred. Plus there was always the added $200 to $500 additional from the inevitable short-throw shifter most people added at that point.

...and THAT's why I don't have that particular car anymore. It was fun to drive, but not fun to own/live with.

 

I know clutch replacement intervals depends on a lot of factors but on average how often do you have to replace the clucth? No race or anything like that, just spirited driving.
