RPM Lmiter: Info Needed

Does anyone else have a hard time getting past the soft limiter on the 2011 5.0?

So far I have only been successful getting by the soft limiter (6850 rpm) once. I had to accelerate gently up to 6250 rpm and then suddenly go full throttle. It went to 7000 rpm and held just a second then settled back to 6850 rpm.

At any constant throttle (from minimum to reach 6850 rpm to full throttle) the PCM anticipates and shuts me off at 6850 rpm.

I know their has to be a trick to getting by this as Ive seen dynos on the cars that run to 7000 rpm.

I wish I had some advice, I got 11 days left.

Any info on this matter would be great as well.

My tuner will most likely be upping the limiter a small amount. Interesting to see if power can hold off to maybe 7100-7200

I heard a rumor it didnt start dropping off until WELL NORTH of 7000 rpm. I took it they didnt mean just a couple of hundred rpm.

I know nothing about engine software so pardon me if this is a dumb question. Is it possible that the computer uses that lower limit when the engine is brand new, then allows a higher cutoff when the engine is fairly well broken in?

It's computer driven, so it could feasibly do that if it has access to the odometer reading, but I haven't heard anything about that.

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the accuracy of the stock tach if that is what you are going by.

Its what Im going by since I cant get my SCT to Datalog (I was hoping it would since it has the Copperhead Update for the 2010 F150). But Im willing to bet its right. I was somewhat sceptical until I got past it and got it to hold at 7000 rpm for about 1-2 seconds before it slowly slid back to 6850 rpm that one time.

I already thought of "Break-in Mode" like some outboard motors have but whats the point of 150 rpm?

I would not be surprised to hear that the RPM limit of the Coyote is stunted for the same reason that the RPM limit of the Yamaha SHO engine is stunted: accessories. Namely, the alternator. They just don't like to spin too fast. UDPs fixed the problem on the SHO (with cams to take advantage of the extra range, 8k+red lines weren't uncommon), and I bet they'd fix the problem here too.

IIRC 05+ software has started to close the throttle plates before hitting redline
so this isn't anything new.

I believe this is why most tuners give you a 6800 rpm limit because from what I have read even on 05-10 mustangs the throttle starts to close 300rpm before the set limit.

Why would it hold 7000? Supposed to be the hard limit where the fuel cut-off steps in.

Ok, I have a question that is kind of related to this topic. It's been posted that the 5.0 is electronically limited to 146 MPH, IIRC. Does anyone know what the V6, V6 202A, and V6 203A are limited to?

If i had to guess, I'd say..whatever the tires are rated for...
I know that doesn't help

It would if the 203A didn't come with Pirelli PZero Nero AS's. I don't think the V6 will be capable of 149+.
