Roar in rear end. The car, not me :)

The Wifey's '13 5.0 auto w/18K miles has developed a roaring the the rear end. Not a grinding, or whining as we know them. It's doesn't change sound on different types pavement like tire noise. I was wondering if anyone has this, and if it would be considered normal. I'm hoping for some info. so I can have a half way intelligent conversation with the service writer. Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks VidPro. Could be, I've had all those thoughts. But you know how it is at times when you take one in, you the "They'll do that" line. My dealer has always been very good when it comes to repairs, but I'm hoping to have some idea close to what the problem could be before the conversation comes to that.

No problem and I know what you mean about being prepared before you go in. I have a good knowledge about cars but my buddy and his brother are still my go to when I have a problem.

My bearings went on my 2000 GT. The sound was constant grinding type sound that got louder and louder over time.

I have a roaring sound somewhere on my 14 GT that the dealer is saying is tire noise. I have 10,700 miles on the car and it's been doing this since about 5 or 6,000 miles. Mine almost sounds like it's coming from the middle of the car but I can't really pinpoint it.

I did put my car up on jack stands and turned it on and put it in gear so that the rear tires would rotate and did not hear any noise at the low speed it was turning. The tires appeared to be out of round as they were spinning.

I just bought a set of 19" take off mustang wheels with almost new tires that I'm going to install and see if I have the same noise. I'm hoping that will give me some better info to take to the dealer.

You can trying rocking the car back and forth while driving at a constant speed. 10 and 2 back and forth with the steering wheel. As the weight of the vehicle changes from side to side listen for the noise to change. This is how the tech can pin point wheel bearing. Also listen to if the noise changes on acceleration or deceleration. May come up with nothing but something you can try on your own. Also maybe feel the inside edges of rear tires for any abnormal wear.

Is this straight line driving, cornering, or all driving?

There's no sign of leakage, and the roar gets louder as the speed increases straight or turning. It's almost non existent at low speeds. I say it isn't the tires, but who knows. It may be just one of those noises that this car is going to make. Probably the best thing is next time I take it for service I'll get the tech to fire it up, and listen. If it comes apart before then that's what the warranties for. Thanks for all the help folks, and if anyone else has an idea I'm all ears.
