For me, I'm using a 7-year old Panasonic Lumix (DMC-FZ30) with a Leica lens. It's completely digital - and has no changeable lenses (but you can use lens attachments for tele and macro). As long as I don't take a photo in a dark environment with no flash, it's perfect (there's too much noise otherwise, requiring post-processing). It has led to another fun hobby over the past few years. These days, something equivalent is amazingly low-cost.

You'll certainly get some great shots with a decent dslr. There are so many advantages (with respect to photography). Virtually no shutter lag time, professional settings, various lenses - just to name a few. If you can take a good picture, the quality of your photos will amaze you. Just enlarge a "phone camera" shot to the size of your laptop screen and compare to one from a decent dslr - it'll be hard to accept anything less after that.

This is real nice! At first, I was enamored with the pony lighting/colors...then just the overall framing...then the reflection of 'that car' in the background - but for some reason, it took me a few looks before I realized it was your car. Duh! But, that's what a great photo shot should do - keep the viewer looking.
