Proper Gearing for Racing?

Proper Gearing for Racing?
OK not REAL racing, but today I was really bummed.
I'm in my 5.0 (no mods) and a Gotta Have It Green (with NO 5.0 on the side, so I am assuming it was a V6?) pulls next to me. We are both going about 50-55.
I was probably in 5th, I don't know. But the other car took off, and I mistakenly floored it, and being in 5th, I started losing BADLY. So I downshifted and at the moment I really don't know what I did. Hopefully I went down to 4th but it felt and sounded like 3rd, the car rev super high, went nowhere, I went back up a gear, but then had to slow down as an intersection approached. Humiliated lol
Also may want that Brembo brake package as I was not impressed with the stopping power of the stock brakes!
SO...if you are in 5th gear, and want to run someone next to you, you should just go down to 4th and floor it?
Sorry, novice hear. Shifting is an art I guess...

My car could definitely use the driver mod too! But I probably would have tried for third in mine... 3.73 Gears on a Track Pack Car. Making a pull with 3.73's you will be shifting into third at 60 MPH.

Shifting is very much an art. It sounds to me as if you went for fourth and ended up in neutral, or were so caught up in chasing down that V6 that you did not let the clutch up.
If I was going for a decent pull at 50-55 mph, I'd probably start in the mid-upper end of third. Whichever gear puts me between 3500-4000 rpms at the given speed is the one I'd want to be in for acceleration.
Calling yourself a novice, I would recommend putting in more time behind the wheel before trying to rip a quick two gear downshift and charging off after another Stang. Be safe man!

Yeah I know, I have no idea what I'm doing here. My GT does have 3.73s. It just seemed like whatever I downshifted to, the revs were too high for it, it was as if the car would not go any faster so I shifted back up to a higher gear but by then I was a car length behind. Ugh. Total fail lol

I didn't tell you the worst part of the story.
The Gotta Have It Green Car that beat me was a .....was a......
girl driving.
Ugh. I must go receive a thousand lashes.
"I know that car," said my wife. She lives in the next subdivision over. I will redeem you" she laughed (she is a good driver!).
I said "Think insurance, think new car, let's not" lol

Practice practice practice. As with anything the more you do it the better you get.
From 50-55 3rd gear would be best as anything lower would put you into the limiter.
Don't forget to blip the throttle (rev match) on the down shift, this will make it easier on the drivetrain and also put you up in the powerband sooner. Or just keep your foot in it and do a little dramatic spin up of the tires.
