Both I70 through Kansas and I80 through Nebraska suck. Pancakeville.
I finally learned how to do it though, I leave St.Louis I70 at about 5pm (summer). By the time I'm passing through Kansas City its getting dark. Then the entire drive is at night and I miss all that nothingness of Kansas and Eastern Colorado. Come day break you're close to Denver and see sunrise off the Rockies.

Yeah, I drove both I-80 and I-70 from Michigan to CO and it's pretty much the same. And I-90 is not really that much better either. FLAT + Corn. Drive through the night. Nothing to see.
Just make sure you stock up on 5 Hour Energy or Monster.

I90 thru to Badlands national park. Stop to see Mount Rushmore and cut down to see Devils mountain. Head down threw Wyoming to Colorado. If you wanted stop in and see Yellowstone just to the northwest Wyoming you could.

Going thru Indiana is not going to be a treat for your senses under any circumstances, but the I-70 route is definitely the lesser of two evils... unless you particularly enjoy the smell of gas/oil being refined and driving in (Chicago) traffic. Also, I-80 across northern Indiana is also called the Indiana Toll Road, so you will pay for the "privilege" and you will pay dearly for gas up north there... some of the most expensive in the state, even though you'll be driving right past the place where they're making it! (GasBuddy.com really IS your buddy when traveling.) Gas prices around Indianapolis usually aren't too bad compared to the state as a whole. Some good places to eat in Indy, as well, especially if you're willing to get off the interstate. Then there's also that 2 1/2 mile race track and its adjunct museum on the west side of town, if you want to stretch your legs before resuming the drive.

Oh Scott, be careful what you wish for! Boob City is no tourist mecca by anyone's standards. Next to this hellhole, even Muncie comes off looking like the Emerald City. Primo activities around here consist of counting the trash trucks dropping loads at the landfill, and finding a really choice parking spot at the Wal-Mart. On the upside, there are plenty of places to get a tattoo, buy discount smokes, and get a set of acrylic nails, so we got that going for us.

I think partially it depends on what time of year you are driving this route. I have driven it in the summer and like was said before, drive it at night and you wake up to the Rockies and the sun hitting them. Great view once you get there. I have also driven I-70 during the winter and there are some killer winter storms that hit that part of the country. I have gotten stuck napping at a rest stop with the two other cars that were following me on the road for hours. Just be mindful of the weather and how far apart the gas stations are. During the summer going across Kansas be mindful of the "Love bugs" as they will cover your windshield very quickly at highway speeds. At night the bugs flying off the median into your headlights will cover then fast as well.

I have driven both, and will say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think both are a nice easy ride. The open spaces are amazing. I will say that on I-70 Kansas City can be a bee-otch during the evening rush when you're heading west. Have a safe ride.
