I went to a college where pretty much everyone had a BMW or Merc that their parents bought, and the cars were beat up, dented, dirty and they drove recklessly. I'm a firm believer something given has no value and you won't learn to respect it.

I bought my 07 GT on my own for myself as a college graduation present and appreciate it so much more because of that.

I can't imagine as an 18-year old rolling up to a cruise night/car show in a brand new 5.0 and having to explain that my parents pay for it, I'd feel pretty dumb. If you're a big mustang fan, work for a summer save up some cash and buy a nice 05-09 GT or maybe a 03/04 Mach 1, that'd be much more impressive!

Just my two cents since you asked.
A little harsh, but I agree. I started working at 17 (a little late, I suppose) to make my own money. My first car, a used 1998 Forest Green Mustang V6 with 140k+ miles for $2800, will always hold a special place in my heart because it was earned, not given.

To OP, I would not recommend a Mustang if it snows often in your area. Also, a 400+ HP car is not a vehicle you put in the hands of a young driver, that I know for sure. Without knowing your driving experience, we can't really answer your question.

However, I know I would have been glad for someone to hand me a $30,000 car after my high school graduation, though I know I am a better person today because no one did.

The other thing about a 18 year old in a powerfull car who loses it and gets into a wreck with it, someone else may be involved, like ME or one of you!

We were all 18 years old at one point. Some of us less recent than others. But I would guess there won't be too many people here who would say that they could be trusted with a 400+ HP car at 18 years old. I know I couldn't.

Lots of judgemental people in this thread here... Anyways, if your dad will get you a GT, I say go for it. Guys, an 18 year old will speed and drive recklessly no matter what car they are in. I started with a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage w/ 105 hp and would go 85 down country roads. I know if I would have wrecked I would have been better off in a car built as well as a Mustang rather than a cheap beater. I went from that 105 hp to a 2006 Mustang GT, and I have never spun out. Not that easy to do, really. So to the OP, try and get your dad to get the GT and if not the V6 will more than suffice. Insurance is not too much different, if at all, and the 5.0 will hold its value better .

Now, all this being said, when I was 18 I had a '74 Firebird that had a 455 in it and it was ridiculously fast. But I worked my way up to that and had a lot of driving experience before the 455 went into the car. And, I bought and paid for the car myself and built the 455 motor that I put in the car myself.

My first car when I was 16 was a 69 Chevelle with a 6 banger and a 3 on the tree!

Next was a 64 F100 with a 292 V8. That motor crapped out and I put a 69 Lincoln 460/C6 in it. That was a fast old truck!

I live in chicago and the winters here vary a lot year to year

My dad drives a lancer evo8 and he lets me take it out so im not a total novice to driving performance cars if you would call it that. I usually don't do dumb things, no tickets/accidents although I wouldn't say im the most mature person of my age.

I enjoy driving and want a car that is fun to drive and I've wanted a mustang since 2005 so it's kind of hard to tell him no I'd rather buy it myself, but I am paying 14k on the v6 now and if I were to get the GT I'd have to pay the 5-6k difference

thanks for your responses, keep em coming plz

Completely agree... the OPs story is changing to conveniently fit the consensus in the thread.

First his dad is buying it for him, now he has driven fast cars, AND is paying 14-16k for it and has the money to chip in an additional 5-6k? Seems fishy.

Don't listen to these guys, no need to justify your dad rewarding you for working hard and getting into college. If, when they were 18, their dad told them he would get them a car none of them would have said "No thanks dad, I want to work and buy one myself...". My parents bought me a car and I still took care of it. Traded it in and bought myself a mustang after college. Working hard in high school and buying a car yourself does not mean you will take better care of it or that you will enjoy it more. Enjoy you parents helping you out now because it will not last for much longer... Good luck!!!

I know some +40 years olds that cant be trusted with a +400 hp car

also.. mustangs are not snow cars! get a evo or sti.. I have owned many mustangs and winter drove many of them. That being said... I in no way think its a good idea for a new sports car driver to do so. It is hellish being stuck in a sports car and you have to dig out every time every where.

wrong! My mom and dad had more sense than to buy me a performance car AS MY FIRST CAR at the age of 17-18. I grew up with fast cars from the age of 5 until I moved out and not until the age of 21 did I get a brand new 1991 LX 5.0. My first car was a 240z it was nice and had decent power and was fun to drive.

But hey parents do odd things these days....a lot more odd then when I was 18.....

Now that's a great car to have in high school!

Flop that back seat down and have plenty of room to get busy!

Wait...that car might be more dangerous than a 412 HP GT...

my first car was great and had alot of space and was amazing in the winter in WA. I could also fit 6 people, tents, food and coolers. Fast is fun but as all things it has it place..

its not the mustang. its the taurus behind the mustang.

Did perfectly fine this past winter in my '02 GT (2nd winter daily driven). There was only one day I couldn't drive it, and that was during a snow storm where pretty much anything and everything ended up in the ditch.

No matter what, I still think the best car for a young guy going to school would be a lesser powerful, better fuel economy, lower insurance cost car. Just stick with the V6 car, it will be a blast to drive. I want one myself.
