All this stuff about manual transmissions and smoothness in shifting and taking off and all is just a matter of practice and technique. Work on it a little, concentrate and practice and pretty soon ir will become second nature to you. Get whatever gear that will give you the performance you are after and don't worry about it.

The lower the highway RPMs, the better for fuel economy. The 5.0 will pull 1800 RPM all day long on the highway. If you want to accelerate quickly from highway cruise speeds, downshift a few gears (just like the automatic trans does...)
