Only in NYC
Ok so I drop my car off yesterday to the Ford service center to have the regular maintenance done, fix two of my curb rash rims and get it detailed. The service manager calls me today and says they found food and pieces of rats and it's droppings inside of my engine. I give him the yeah ok buddy reply he then says no I'm serious and that I'm lucky that it didn't chew any of the wires or components inside the engine bay. He also said it was a common thing. I've never heard it before. His advise was to put moth ***** in a sock and hang them in the engine. So how many of you guys /girls have heard this b4 and does that moth thing really work?

Glad I don't live in NYC!!!! Now I know what's meant when folks say "bigger than a New York Rat".
My dad used to use moth ***** around the shrubs to keep the local dogs and cats from peeing or crapping around them. That worked, so I guess rats will not like them either.
What about rat poison? I'd rather kill them then chase them away.

We had some sort of rodent trash the underhood NVH deadening stuff on a Malibu and a practically brand new Camaro SS about a month ago at work. The **** things can make a big mess in a hurry.

You can also check with your local hardware store for a rodent spray. You can spray it around the car perimeter, as a first line of defense. The moth ***** may work. Try googling it. This can be a disaster if they chew through the electrics or brake lines.
Here is a link to a story in the NY Times that I just found. The end of the article talks about repellents. Hope this is helpful.

Being a former NYer and having had lots of classic cars that got stored all winter.. mothballs in socks do indeed work to keep rodents out of the car.

I'd suggest placing a few cats around the car, but those rats would most likely eat the cats. Plus they crawl on top of the cars and sleep. When I had to park at an apartment complex a few years back, I got annoyed at coming out in the morning and seeing cat paw prints on my windshield, roof, and hood.

that sucks man. my dad had a '68 camaro rs 327, meaning a small engine for a large bay, so the fan shroud was really long. because it was nice and warm after driving home the family cat used to crawl up and actually sleep in the fan shroud. you know, until it got all of its limbs dislocated by the fan...
