Amsoil at 1800 miles, first change free from dealer, plan to do it again at 10k, then every 10k on my 10k/year DD.

I have talk to couple of techs about the oil life reading and they said that it depends on where you live for that Senor to give you a accurate reading. For example where I live the oil life doesn't move quickly I had 3100miles and my oil life was at 98% and I drove my mustang hard. Now that I already done my 3rd oil change and reset the oil life on my sencond oil change and not on the third it says it has 81%

I'd rather do it myself. I don't want to worry about what kind of oil they put in, what weight, etc.
Then scheduling an appointment will be a pain. The dealer is too far from my house and work.

I always did my first oil change at 3000 miles. That's what the service guy at the dealer suggested, and never had any problems.

My dealer said that he would give me my free oil change whenever I wanted & that the factory oil was not special break-in oil. I had my mechanic change my oil with 5w50 Castrol EDGE & NAPA Gold filter.

When changing the oil in the '13 GT500, how does one get the oil out of the track pack's engine oil cooler located in the front grill? Does the oil gravity-drain back into the oil pan when the engine is cut? My call to SVT has them also working on an answer.

I couldn't stand going past 750 mi on my new Performance White, stripe delete Shelby without changing the factory oil, now full of factory assembly lubricants! The oil refill w/filter does take 8.5 qts, not the 9.5 qts that the mags have been saying, unless the oil cooler always holds the last qt!

Just like to let you guy's know that my local Ford dealer DOES NOT sell Motocraft 5w50, they told me that the never had. For some reason it seem that Ford Canada have replaced it with Castrol 5W50 until about one month ago than switch to Valvoline 5W50 since!!

Talking '13 GT w/track package oil filter ????

I see some sites saying that the oil filter for all 5.0's is the FL500S, but the FL820 also seems to fit ...

The Track Package uses 5w50 full synthetic and 8.5 qts of it, instead of the 8 qts of 5w20 in the "regular" 5.0

So which one is factory-fit and recommended for this application? Thanks guys.

BTW, I've found the FL500S for $4.46 each at rockauto.com

Use the 820S that's what the 2013 GT500 uses.

What's your owner's manual say? Don't over think it.

Thanks guys, even the sarcastic one lol

I didn't have access to the addendum below last night when I posted this thread, and was too lazy to go outside to the car to see if it would call for a particular/different filter, turns out it doesn't say anything about the filter.

The owner's manual is sitting here next to me, but I never once checked in there, even though I did think about it ... lol

I'm guessing that if I use the bigger 820, I should probably add a little more oil?
Maybe make it a 9-qt fill?

As luck would have it, rockauto.com has 8 FL820 filters at a "wholesaler closeout" (with a 30-day warranty) price of $2.03 each, and their regular supplier-price FL820's with regular warranty are still a very nice $3.54 each, so I think I'm gonna grab a few 820's in preparation for what is inevitable

Don't overfill. My owners manual even states not to "top off"; let it stay within the add/fill marks.

At about 2400 miles now on my '13 5.0/Track Package, and the IOLM says about 79% life left.

I do NOT plan on waiting till about 10,000 miles before dumping the oil that was put in at the factory, I'm thinking of doing it by 5k, and I have a new Ford Racing FL820 filter sitting here waiting for that time.

As far as oil though ..... the Track Package takes 5w50 full synthetic, and the local stores can only get the Castrol EDGE ...

I read somewhere on here about Ford-recommended brands and that the Castrol was one of them, besides Ford's own Motorcraft brand of course ...

Anybody know what the other brands are?

It won't be 10k, the system works off a calendar and the odometer. You can drive 10 miles and store it for 6 months and the system will tell you oil change time.

As far as I can find the only 5W50 oil out there is the Motocraft Full Syntheitc and the Castrol Edge. They are both about the same cost. The Mustang no longer uses the FL820 filter though, so that will not do you much good. It now uses the FL500S filter, and there is not a Ford Racing version of that filter AFAIK. 5k miles is a good interval to do your changes at, it keeps things easy to keep track of.

The FordRacing-version of the 820 is being used on the Boss302 racecar (302S ?) and there are a bunch of current 5.0 owners that use the 820 on their engines ...

I plan on going to a small shop that I've used before to do the oil changes on my previous fun car, and I'll take pics of original filter VS the new 820 ...

Many oil change questions for new 2013 GT

My new 2013 GT Prem has 1100 miles and I am thinking about bringing it to a Ford dealer for its first oil change. I have lots of questions:

1. does Ford use break-in oil? I have never seen a true answer to this. Does Ford use some kind of break-in oil or is it "regular" oil? If not break-in, what kind of oil does Ford supply for new engines?

2. Synthetic/Semi-synthetic - Should I go with full synthetic or semi-synthetic? What does Ford offer? How good is their oil? What do I ask for? I am not racing it and I do not have the track pack.

3. My engine says 5W-20, does synthetic and/or semi-synthetic come in this grade? I will be driving my car year round.

4. Changing the oil filter at every change is a given but are there different grades of filters that Ford offers?

5. What is the difference is oil change frequency between synthetic and semi- synthetic? The engine oil monitor doesn't know what kind of oil I am using so how offen does it need to be change depending on the type of oil?

6. How come the track apps display does not show oil pressure?

Thanks.

Joe C.
