Noob driver question. (redline)

After driving decently fast the other day, i red-lined twice for a bout a half of a second. Soon afterwards i noticed a smelll come through the vents.

Can anyone tell me what that smell was and how bad I ****ed up. lol

This is my first car that i've ever owned where Ive felt the need to even ask a question like this. Usually I have a second or so to glance down.

Most likely did not cause any problems. If you have a newer Mustang, they are designed to partially shut down at redline ti help prevent damage. Just don't do it every time you play around. I would bet everyone out there has bumped redline more than once....if they play hard with their car.

The smell.....may have just been a change due to the A/C shutting down as designed at wide open throttle.....or you need to change your pants after the run....lol

I agree with the above statement. I have hit the rev limiter.....so don't feel bad. I'm not used to how fast it gets there quite yet.

Do you drive a 2011 Mustang GT 6-speed?

My car does that everytime I get the RPM's near redline... I smell a funky burning odor through the vents shortly thereafter. It's been 24000 miles and it still does it.

You might be smelling the catalytic converters. They produce a very distinctive smell at WOT.

I also have a 2011 GT manual and I've only smelled that smell once when I down shifted to the wrong gear and it redline bad and shut down. But when I race, I tip the redline bar in every gear and never smell it.

I had the smell once but I think it was some of the clutch. It was when I first got the car and I accidentally hit 2nd instead of 4th while exiting the highway at almost 70 mph. I rev matched and when it went up the rearend got a little squirrely and I caught it and mashed the clutch back in. Stupid shifter.

... I don't think that we are talking about the same thing. I am not talking about blowing up the engine, burning the clutch, or getting exhaust fumes in the cockpit. Just getting the Rev's up close to redline will do it.

OP: Do you have any kind of a tune on your car, like a 91-octane tune? Mine does.

Thanks
