Well as for the Camaro the concept may differ more than people expect. The 05' Mustang concept (think it came out in 02-or 03) looked more like the GT500 than the actual Mustang we got in 05'. It was much more agressive looking and looked quite different from what we actually got. The one common theme between the two was that they were both retro.

Most cars are designed way ahead of when they come out...unless they are fast tracked. It won't be old because it hasn't been shown outside a small group.
The Camaro unfortunately (if so close to the concept) will have been shown for at least 3 years...and might be long in the tooth. The general public has seen for years, something they can't buy. Will it live up to the hype it created? or will people just be sick of it by the time it comes out?
Ford hasn't shown the 2010 to us yet, so it won't be old.
One thread a while back mentioned that Ford was a bit concerned that the look of the 2010 might be considered ripping off the 2010 Camaro, as it has very similar characteristics (ie: hips etc)
Even though the design was done before the Camaro was ever shown to the public.
I'm sure it'll be a good looking car, but more aggressive than the current model. Not everyone will like it though.
But you might want to like it if you want a 5.0![Biggrinjester](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrinjester.gif)

Good points Boomer. As for Ford being worried about the '10 looking similar to the Camaro....they shouldn't for two reasons. 1 (and don't shoot me) but the '10 Camaro is a superb looking car and 2, to a degree all the muscle cars from the late 60's early 70's had similar design themes, so it's nothing new.
Basically, I'd like an updated '69 which, if you think about it, would look similar to the Camaro anyway (hips/similar side window treatmeant/shark nose).....just with Mustang design references.
Well, I think so anyway

I think the key differance that will make them look different is that Ford must retain the "fastback" roofline of the current 05' Mustang. While the Camaro and Challenger have a more conventional coupe roofline. This works for me, personally the only classic 65'-73 Mustangs I like are all fastbacks. I have never been a fan of the coupes or convertibles.

I wish we could at least get a glimpse of the 2010 Mustang. I'm considering getting an '08 just because I want a current-gen S197, but may wait if the '10 looks incredible. I really like how the current gen Mustang looks (with a few caveats), but am afraid the '10 will look like some sort of disfigured spaceship in the same vein as the Giugiaro Mustang and '09 Camaro. Both have some design elements I like but look awful as a whole.
Frankly, if the standard '10 Mustang GT looked very similar to what we have now but as a true fastback with hips, perhaps a new hood, and at least a n/a 5.0 or 5.4 engine, I would be satisfied.

Actually, since the price of gas is projected by DOE to be $4.75 a gallon by 2010, Ford has rushed to development a new concept called, internally, "Mustang III" as a replacement for the current size Mustang. This line of thinking may be familiar to those old enough to remember the Mustang II.
Remember the ad? Score: Mustang II, Boredom 0.
The Mustang III will not have 13 inch rims like the Mustang II and will be better proportioned. The base engine will be a new light weight, injected L4 and the high-performance engine will be the new 3.5 V6.
Look for lots of options in the top two versions. GT as a model will go away, as too many people still link GT to V8s (and rightfully so!).
This idea, of a Mustang III, was one reason that Ford dropped the wagon and hatchback versions of the Focus for 2008. Several full size clay models have been done, and after photos, etc, most have been destroyed or modified, as extra security measures.
And finally,,,,, none of this is true. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

OK, so that's a "new 71/73", but just imagine the '69 given the modern treatment too. That's what I want the '10 to look like. If we're stuck with the current glasshouse and C pliiar, that ain't gonna happen.

Why don't you guys consider the 05' a fastback? It looks like a 67'68 fastback to me. I think of coupes being more like the 4th gen Mustangs or the new Camaro and Challenger.

I highly recommend that you take a look again...The roofline on the 67-68 fastback, slopes all the way back into the trunk at an angle..Where as the roofline's slope on the 05, ends right before the trunk..Notice how the trunk sits horizontal and flat, more like a coupe..
The current S-197 resembles the 65-66 2+2 fastbacks, far more than the 67-68 models...

Ok I get what your saying but I think its a little bit nit-picky, It resembles a fastback more than a traditional coupe. I think when people see the current Mustang they think fastback not coupe.

I wasn't being nit-picky at all..
The bottom line is.. you wanted to know the reason, as to why we don't consider the 05.. as a true fastback..
So once again ! here's your explanation.. there's a huge difference between a 2+2 fastback coupe (half fastback) over a full fastback, in which the roofline extends all the way back to the rear of the car..at a slope/angle
Being as the 67-68 fastback.. is my favorite Mustang of all time !
my only gripe with the current S-197, from a styling point of view is..Ford chose against designing the car, as a full fastback..
So from that aspect..I was very disappointed.
As for those people, in which you refer to who see the current Mustang as more of a fastback, than a coupe..Your obviously referring to the general public, and not to the true enthusisast..who's familiar with the Mustang's heritage
That being said, the current S-197.. has far more in common with the 65-66 (2+2 fastback coupe) than the 67-68

That is, the last thing Ford wants to happen is to have potential customers like you delay their purchases.
