Sooner or later somebody is going to run the iolm down to 0 percent with regular motorcraft oil and a filter. The miles may be 2000 or 10000 but they will sent it off for analysis and that will end all the debates. My guess is that Ford knows what they are doing here with a safety margin built in. Some guy on bob is the oil guy ran his Honda factory fill to 8500 or something like that and the report came back excellent.

I would probably try to change it about twice before 5000 miles and then just run of what the computer told me down to 25 percent or so just to have a margin of safety. This 3K 3 month thing is just a myth from the past. It probably made good sense decades ago but engines and oils of any type are just better in every way these days.

Yep, should change it every time you buy fuel.

Nahhhh! Everyone knows Ford Engineers cant hold a candle to GM (Who's OLM has been proven right again over and over in UOA).

This same argument came up when we first stretched oil change intervals from 500 miles. Change it when you want but dont kid yourself that its going to last longer. Their are Taxis with 750,000 miles with 15,000 mile changes on Mobil 1. If you really care get a pump and start pulling samples and change it when the UOA says.

Dont forget about the Honda olm either. If a guy was iffy about it(did I just make a pun about iffy lube?) I would run Pennzoil Plat, Mobile 1, ect...... Pick your poison. The calibration is made for Motorcraft oil or just regular dino like Penzoil, valvoline, ect...... Going synthetic I would think would give you even a better margin of error. Its also my understand each iolm is calibrated to a particular engine in the Ford line up. All Fords dont have this feature yet unfortunately but I expect them to incorporate it into the entire line over time.

I agree 100% changing oil before 1,000 miles and then after 3,000 between is a overkill on most car use conditions, Unless its a race or hard use....oil is 200x better then it was 20 years ago
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...oil/index.html
Yet today's modern oils are vastly improved over those of 20 years ago. For oils that meet the current "SJ" service designation, viscosity breakdown is no longer a significant problem, thanks to modern formulation technologies and viscosity enhancers. Auto manufacturers have also redesigned their engines for tighter clearances and instituted precision machining techniques that take advantage of thinner oil to deliver improved fuel economy through reduced friction

No, I think it is not "necessary" . . . but neither is a Mustang, so just do it anyway.

To me the 'stang is a special car so it deserves special treatment, mine is getting Mobil 1 every 5K miles, even though the oil meter will say about 50%. If I had bought it new I would have changed the oil between 500-1000 miles.

Stinger, you lost me a bit. Did you send off for a UOA and get a bad report?

I understand everybody wanting to pamper a Mustang trust me. My Father has owned all kinds of new cars over the years and he would usually change oil the first time around 3K or so. Mostly Toyotas Im ashamed to say but a few Fords and Gms thrown in there. He has run them all a lot of miles with zero trouble engine wise. He is now running a 03 4runner with a 4.7 V8 and He does not change the oil but every 10 or 12K at best. That amounts to about once a year in his case. Now, this even makes me go humm. But, he is running Mobile 1 EP and the 4.7 and mobil is a marriage made in heaven. The 4.7 just wears well with this oil and the UOA's prove it. Its a bit too far for me but its still running perfect after 8 years of use. My guess is that this engine will run a long long time. Its not abused or revved like a 5.0 or 4.6 but it does see a lot of short trips. Personally, I think he is pushing it too far because of his driving habits and that is something he does not understand. He thinks only about mileage and not what kind of mileage it is. He is easy on engines but short trips them to death and I have preached to him till I am blue in the face about it. That is why I like the iolm. It takes the guess work out.

I have a older truck that I checked today that I hardly ever drive and it has been driven 4000 miles in 2 years since the last time I changed oil in it. I did put mobil 1 in it but I probably should change it. One thing I get confused about is mileage vs time. I would appreciate anybody that has some knowledge about that. My truck has been short tripped to death also.

I voted yes, I do mine at around 500 miles and every 6 months after that (Mine is not a daily driver, sometimes weeks before I bring it out). I use Mobile 1 exclusively.

Is their a link to your 1000 mile UOA on the 5.0? I would love to see it....

Did you get a particle count too or just the basics?

I wouldn't do it at 1000 miles I would actually do it at 900. You never know what can go bad between 900 and 1000 miles.

Or that critical time between 875 and 900.

What are you using? Does motorcraft make a full synthetic oil or just that synthetic blend stuff?
