Is it necessary to get an oil change after 1k mi?
Just past 1000 mi on the odometer. Do I really need an oil change? Or is it not really a big deal with modern engines?

Same here, I don't really think it's "necessary" and doing so early probably isn't going to extend engine life or anything, however most car nuts do anyway.
I usually wait till 1,500+ miles though to make sure it's more fully broken in.
My regime is:
1st oil change at 1,500-2k
Then at 5k miles
Then every 5k after that with top rated fully synthetic oil.
If I was to take the car to the track (with curves) , I'd change the oil after that too.

The whole point of the 1k oil change is just to get new oil in the motor since the first thousand miles is a break in period and(though generally not with factory motors) can sometimes have debris. For those of you that plan on doing the 1k oil change, make sure you cut open the filter and examine it.
I've used nothing but Motorcraft since day one. Let the motor settle in properly before moving to a thicker oil. At least that's what i'd do.

I do it before 1000. My 08 B was at 700 and my 10 brand X winter car at 900. Why? Cheap insurance. Actually free - as both Ford & Chrysler Dealer's gave a complimentary oil change coupon. Ford said I should before 1k, Chrysler said it wasn't necessary.
I do it for peace of mind in the event of any remaining assembly lube/fluids from the factory, minute wear particles, and any blow-by gasses from the brief period before the rings are well seated, that might contaminate the oil.
I do a break in that runs the engine thru the full range up to redline and back several times for the first 500 miles (although some say rings are seated within the first hundred). I don't push it hard or hang at redline, but I run it there often so everything is seated at the full range of "metal stretch". It seemed like I smelled gaseous fumes as I smelled the dipstick oil. So a quick oil & filter change before 1k is great peace of mind to me. I use Motorcraft blend dino/synth.

Ford gives a 5 year or 60,000 mile warranty on the Mustangs powertrain. Ford says change the oil every 10,000 miles or something like that. They should know whats best......right? Do you think Ford wants our Mustangs to last 20 years and 300,000 miles? I don't think so........
My first oil change was at 500 miles (free). My second oil change was at 1,200 miles. My next oil change will be at 2,200 miles, then at 3,200 miles i will change to full synthetic motor oil and start going 3,000 miles between changes.
I know its 'over kill' but this gives me peace of mind LOL!!!

Your engine will thank you for new oil after 1500 miles. Send off the oil to Blackstone Labs in Indiana. They do oil test for about $25. Lets prove that the undissolved solids are present in the motor oil from the engine breaking in.

Yes, I do. If their cars don't hold up very well, their reputation will suffer and they will sell fewer cars in the future. Few people will say "Well, my Mustang (or whatever) has 100,000 miles on it and the engine is shot. I guess I'll buy another one."

That's exactly the kind of thinking that hurt GM in the 70s (and arguably ever since). "People want new cars every couple of years... they don't need to last."

The oil is supposed to have undissolved solids in it....changing the oil more freq. than the factory recommendation is throwing away money...there is no break-in period on modern cars...it's 1950's thinking and I own a bunch or 1950's cars

I always change at 1k miles. You would not believe the amount of metal thats in the oil at 1K miles.
I always have my oil sent to the lab when it comes out.
