Navigation system
I just saw a YouTube video of a 2011 GT with the entertainment package and navigation. Mine has the simple shaker system, no touchscreen. I am sooooooo jealous. It looks amazing. Anyone know whether it is possible to swap for the touchscreen unit with Navigation? I don't really care about the 10GB hard drive and back-up camera. I would like to have a touchscreen and use Sync, however....thoughts?

There was a whole thread on this not too long ago. I think the guy was told no way by his dealer, but then managed to get all the parts he needed off of a wrecked car. I personally like the idea of doing an ipad mod or waiting for a for a nice android tablet like the xoom. Either way it is going to be a bit of work.

If you can get it retrofitted you may find a way to earn some extra cash.

The head unit is just a module basically. The touch screen is a thin monitor and the cable harnesses as well as center stack cutout is different. There is an integrated hard drive as well. Take a shortcut rigging it all up and you may not be able to get map updates or future system service. The overall SYNC features differs slightly as well. By the time you get it all done properly it will probably cost you more than the factory option. I posted these videos in another thread and hopefully people will see and understand the system's capabilities and make the decision on this option rather than trying to retrofit it later. I think the mistake is that people call it the navigation system whick makes the price unattractive.

Do you think the dealership would install the stock system on mine aftermarket? If so, anyone know the cost?

Your car, is most of the time the second highest valued item you will buy. Home being the highest value. Its a lot cheaper to order the options you want than it is to add them at a later time. When i ordered my V-6, i checked everything i wanted and by the time i was through, i had ordered every option except for the glass roof .
I have the factory h.i.d. headlights, i think it was a $525 dollar option. If you go to the Ford parts web site and buy all the parts needed for the factory h.i.d. headlights, they would cost somewhere around $3,000 .

I would stay away from the Navigation system in the Mustang. While I like the look of the screen and controls better with the NAV the functionality is limited. For instance all the advanced NAV features are tied to a Sirius subscription. Get rid of Sirius and you have a base level NAV system at best. Plus it's already outdated by Ford's own MyFord Touch. If you got $2k to blow go for it. If not use that money elsewhere.

a) It's "not just NAV"
b) The only thing linked to Sirius is the traffic link. Not any different than my Garmin that wanted money for the link to MSN traffic or the "free" traffic service that puts advertisements up on the screen. Do it's not any more :free: than watching commercials on TV

Sorry your dealers knew very little about the options. That seems more common these days. We are waiting for someone to post up details about a factory retrofit and let us know how much it costs.

BMWs touch screen system video features. It has a much smaller screen and it requires a joystic to interface with the system which I hate. Same for Audi and Mercedes. Just compare to what Ford offers for probably less money:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8AgydQQHHo - BMWs Electronics Package system overview
Again the Ford system - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0DS_...layer_embedded - It is also voice controlled (very basic I do not agree).
Please (anyone) help find other manufacturers system overview and prices for comparison. I haven't found a system better than what Ford offers. I will use it in the seperate thread that I will start.

Sometimes I think Ford Marketing should have charged $1500 for an electronics upgrade package for the HD radio, touchscreen interface, DVD Player, dual zone climate control, jukebox, etc and then tacked on the same $500 that other manufacturers do for the GPS, as a seperate option.
It would clear up a lot of the confusion...

The Sirius functions that enhance the Elec Pkg aren't even expensive. Its $71/year for the live traffic ($40) + travel link ($30) . You don't have to buy to radio subscription to get it. Each item comes a la carte.
I never use satellite radio but I use the traffic daily so I bought that. I bought the travel link just for the cool factor

Let's clear a couple of things up.
1) Touch Screen Nav was offered in the 08 and 09. Not as nice as the 2010 and 2011 units in the stang but it was an option.
2) The price you pay is way too much for what you get. While it's nice to control the radio/cd/mp3 from the screen it doesn't justify such a high price. As a NAV system it's no better then a $100 Garmin and the map updates cost $200.
3) Plus the unit is already out of date by Ford's own MyFord Touch interface with no promise of feature or future updates moving forward. Talk of apps for the 2012 unit but no promise of it working with 10 or 11 model cars.
Yes my SHO has the NAV but I bought it for a steal used so I didn't really have a choice. If I was ordering a new SHO I would not purchase it. I just ordered a 2012 GT and did not include the NAV. I don't have interest in watching videos in my car. Either I'm driving or I'm out of it.

To each their own.

Don't get too dazzled about MyFord yet, the Edge and MkX lost its "recommended" rating solely because of the bugs in it. Personally I'm not a fan of cables running all over my dash, like the $150 Garmin. And yes, you need the cables if you want the traffic link.

As for MyFord Touch losing the "recommended" rating that has more to do with Consumer Reports being small minded about using the system. I've used it pretty extensively in a new Edge and found it to work just fine.
I find that you're really reaching to justify your purchase of the NAV system. Look if you're happy that's all that matters. I'm just saying from experience it's not a wise investment. It's becoming dated quickly and will only get worse for someone who wants to keep the car long term. If you plan on switching cars every couple years and have the cash then go for it.

In Canada, it's a hefty fine and points off your license under our distracted driving laws. The first ticket you get could cost you as much as half the cost of the option.

It's no more expensive than the equivalent system in other manufacturer's vehicles, including MyFord, since MyFord is part of a Trim Level upgrade costing much more.
