navigation option

Can this be turned off or is the screen constantly on whether it is being used or not?

a single button turns the display off, but not completely, as it still shows info such as radio station and temp/fan speed at the very bottom.

Yeah, it serves multiple purposes other than just the Nav function so the screen itself is always working at some level.

Here are a couple of user reviews that you may find helpful. If you press the DISPLAY button twice the screen goes totally dark which is good for night time driving.

See a great 3 part review of the electronics package below:

It does much more than navigation. You can decide if it is something for you or not. I love my system. Yes a portable navigation and many smart phones have similar features but not fully integrated like the factory system.

There are many possibilities for the screen. Yes, you can turn it completely off, or you can turn it mostly off with just the "status bars" on the top and bottom of the screen. When you are displaying a map the status bars will show you some information about things like stereo settings, time, inside and outside temperatures. The screen can also display stereo or HVAC controls full screen. There is also a configurable "Home" screen that is split between the left and right sides and the right half is split between the top and bottom. You can have it display stereo information in the upper right part, temperature stuff in the lower right, and map on the left side. What you want displayed in which part of the Home screen is configurable to some degree.

I like the fact you can down load pictures to it. I have my grand kids on there.
