How Long Is Too Long -- From Produced to Delivered

PLEASE NOTE!! The "8 months" option between "6 weeks" and "10 weeks" should have been "8 weeks". Please treat that choice as such. Thank you.

I thought it would be interesting to have a poll showing the distribution of opinions on how long is too long to wait for delivery. Specifically, we are talking the time you have to wait between the car being produced and the car arriving at the dealership. For greater relevancy, answer this for cars built early in a new production year.

I know some of you hare going crazy, and others are saying be patient, it will be worth the wait. But even for the most patient of us, there is a period of time that will seem unreasonably excessive. Lets see where everyone thinks that cutoff point is.

OOPS!! The "8 months" entry, as you may guess, should say "8 weeks". Sorry for the typo. I don't think I can edit it.

TEN WEEKS IS NORMAL for a Mustang order-out in the middle or later in any MY run ... expecting anything less at THE BEGINNING of a MY is unrealistic.

FYI: mine took 13 WEEKS.

Please note the poll is for the time from produced/built to delivered. Time from order being placed to order being built excluded. I'm guessing the 13 weeks is from time of order? Or did it really take that long just for shipping?

He's counting his pre-order 2/18 date to his 5/21 delivery. I'd wait 13 weeks if I put my order in before production started too.... but 13 weeks after they're already in production? Not so much.

My Dad's 2010 Taurus took around 2 months. My 2011 Mustang took almost 2 (55 days) months.

I ordered 1/21, but I'm not counting that.

Car was built 4/13 and I got it 5/29.

Once the car was actually built, it sat for a while, but not as long as others here have waited.

For a car?
To me, 3 months is an acceptable time from my production date.
(some people can't grasp this concept and it drives me batty)
This is to take into consideration possible unforseen issues.

ya now this statement makes no sense to me
you're saying you expect unforseen issues then?
why buy something as complicated as an automobile expecting issues?
to me that's saying "i know it's going to be a headache but give it to me anyways"

TSBs and recalls happen, but i don't buy a car expecting them

Sorry, guess I mis-read the question ... mine was built 4/15, on a train leaving detroit area 5/14 and delivered 5/21.

So 5 weeks from build date to delivery.

According to my dealer 2 to 3 WEEKS is typical delivery from build date so mine was 2-3 weeks late.

With my car I received the paperwork folder which included ...

Work Order dated 4/28/2010 (attached)
Inspect on receipt to Yard 4/19
QC Inspection 4/26
AR33-6342508-AF V6 Faux Cap Installed 4/26
White Label Verify 4/26
BR3J-63208A18-AA5YGY FRT DR UPPER RH-V6 Spor...

Hand written note on folder (attached) stating ...
"DO NOT MOVE WAITING ON ACCESSORY INFO"

Hand written note on back of shipping label stating ...
"NEEDS FAUX CAP"
(could not attach as shipping label was color so I scanned it in color making it a 10MB pdf)

So at least ways I was able to see why my car was delayed until the end of April, but why it was held another 2 weeks is still a mystery.

Wow that sucks, so they held your car just for the fake gas cap on the trunk. See if Ford would just tell people that was what their car was being held for it would of put a lot of people at ease. Or maybe **** off a lot of people knowing that something that trivial was holding it up.

Why do they have to be car related...could be manufacturing/workforce related.
This could be anything from parts shortages (JIT..yay), supplier issues, union strikes, etc.

Do you purchase your car with union contract timings in mind?
Could be a valid reason why you don't get your car on time.

Back in 2004 - I remember the date exactly: November 17, 2004, my wife and I ordered a 2005 Premium GT in black. Every freaking Friday I'd call the evil robot lady only to find out my order had not been serialized. This went on through MAY of 2005. I was willing to wait longer but the wife was not. She killed the order and a wait for another two years was on. I am actually glad we waited in retrospect. It gave Ford the chance to work out some kinks with the S197. Very satisfied now.

I do sympathize for those who are waiting. The anticipation invades your every waking moment.

I don't get the guys who answered 4, 5, or 6 months. You're saying that if the car is already built and it takes over three months before it shows up at the dealer's lot, that's acceptable? I'm guessing they aren't in the USA or Canada. Perhaps if you are in Libya or Turkmenistan you would expect it to take five months to get to you.

I think people are confusing date built with date ordered. It has been almost 4 months since I ordered but my car is only delayed a month since original ETA. Should be here after about 2 months since built. Not a newsworthy delay by any means on paper, but man does it freaking suck.
