Hill Descent ?

I see a few posts about running the autos with the hill descent on and getting better performance. Is this true and why?

I thought for a minute that this was going to be about the Pike's Peak hill climb which is this Sunday.

Could it have something to do with the cylinder shut-off function?

I didn't think the 5.0 had cylinder shut off.

The following is what is in the esource book as one of the features of the 5.0..

Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-off
(ADFSO)
• Helps maximize fuel efficiency
• Temporarily interrupts fuel delivery and consumption when the vehicle normally slows down while maintaining normal engine operation
• System uses the transmission to keep the engine running at a low, more fuel-efficient operating level whenever possible
• Normal fuel delivery resumes when the vehicle reaches a low speed or when the driver accelerates
• Helps maintain excellent driveability with a Ford-proprietary software that integrates the fuel shut-off technology with the V6 and V8 powertrain operation
• System is automatic and requires no interaction from the driver

Read thread start .https://themustangsource.com/f726/5-...l-pics-484633/

As you are going down a steep grade and start to apply brakes, it will down shift. Apply more brake (lightly), and it will down shift again.
If you start to ascend, then it seems to shift normally.
I found this great for Mt. driving. ( especially on the long descents, where they had 18 wheeler runaway ramps or just short steep descents)
However, for moderate hilly type terrain, I didn't really use it or need it.

Hope this is helpful, but as they say.... "You really have to be there"

I read people using this for 1/4 mile runs. Not sure why though.

This is what i read on another forum

When you turn hill descent on it does a few things:

1. Disables 6th gear overdrive
2. Downshifts through each gear (Keeps the revs up)
3. Tends to hold each gear longer when accelerating

I use it around town all the time and feel a difference in the responsiveness / shift logic.

I guess I'm a little off topic, but here's my hill descent technique:

put it in neutral and let it roll!

you'd be amazed how fast you can get going that way, while burning almost no gas . . . .

I'll have to give this a try in normal driving. I have used it going down long hills with a car in front of me. They will be touching their brakes now and then, i don't have to touch my brakes any.

The uhaul I rented had this (kinda), tow/haul mode. Pretty funky how it down shifts while you're braking.
