Hi, and here is some info!
I understand your point Boomer, it is going to be a heavier car. Just because the car is heavier doesn't mean that the car is doomed. The Camaro has been heavier than the Mustang for several years and has kept up or in many ways outperformed the mustang.
Here is an example The 98' SVT Cobra was lighter and has 5HP more than the 05' GT yet times show that the GT is a good half second faster than the Cobra and the equal of the 01' Cobra with 20 more HP. In my previous post I also mentioned that, though not as fast as the GT500 the new Challenger keeps up with it despite having 75 less HP and an automatic tranny.
All I am saying is that GM always makes a competitive performance car. Unlike Ford they inject high performance into every model unlike Ford sticking to just the Mustang. The outgoing LS1 Camaro is still on par with the current Mustang GT in terms of performance and I have a feeling that the next gen car is going to blow the 4th gen Camaro out of the water the way our 5th gen Mustang did to the previous gen!
The fasted stock time posted from a non-mustang magazine that I could find was a road test of the 05' GT they list it going 0-60 in 5.1 and 1/4 in 13.5 with a 5 speed. The G8 sedan that is expected to share it's platform with the Camaro ran 0-60 in 5.3 and 1/4 in 13.8 with an auto tranny and costs just about the same as a Mustang GT, I figure the Camaro will be a couple ticks faster and much smaller than the G8 and still be priced around the same territory as the Mustang.
All i'm trying to say is that the Mustang isn't the only car in town anymore. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be stunned by how fast the Camaro is gonna be

The numbers on the 350ish(give/take)HP Camaro (lets not kid ourselves...they dyno'd way more to the wheels than their HP was even listed at)compared to the 99/01 Cobra (320hp) taking into consideration their weight?
I wouldn't exactly use magazine times as a good indication either... in either case.
The weight, engine, gearing in these new cars is going to tell the story.
Yes the new Camaro is going to be fast, no doubt.
But lets 'weight' and see shall we
99mustang gt was around 3250lbs camaro z28 was 3400lbs. 98 cobra was around 3350lbs. but everyone knows that the ls1 was underrated at 305 in the Z and really put out around 340 which is why the 4th gen f-body was good for a mid 13. not to mention evan smith ran a 12.9 in a bone stock SS.
So basically 150lbs give or take, 100hp difference....and a 5 speed vs 6 speed
No wonder they were WAY quicker.
If anything the HP will be closer and the weight spread will be equal to or bigger for the new cars
Should be VERY interesting

We already know the new 5.0 mod GDI, will get around 400HP. IMO as long as the 2011 GT doesn't gain any substantial weight. The Mustang should compete very well alongside the Challenger, and Camaro.
At any rate, I'll settle for a base Mustang GT w/ 400HP anyday over the competition.

I am really upset because I thought the Mustang GT was coming out with GDI the first year of the refresh. What we to suspect in the mean time. Furthermore, Ford has done nothing to create a buzz to get people interested in their car over the competition. I suppose it is best to keep it under wraps though. I just need some uncovered pictures or something.
