I'd love to see the 3.5L Duratec (DOHC) V6 in the 2010/11 Mustang, and it shouldn't be a stretch to do so as it's already used in plenty of other Fords, Mercurys, and Lincolns. Worth noting, that engine is now a confirmed option in the 2010 Fusion (Sport model only, other Fusions still get the 221hp 3.0L Duratec V6) and it makes 260+ hp. The 2010 Fusions should hit showrooms about the same time as the 2010 Mustangs.

Let me put a half second in perspective for you.
At 60 mph, you're traveling 88 feet/second. The Mustang is about 15.5 feet long. So a difference of 1 second at 60 mph is 5.5 car lengths. The difference of a half second is almost 3 car lengths. Do you call that close?
For the 1/4 mile, where the difference is a full second:
At 100 mph, you're traveling 146 feet/second. So every second difference is 9.5 car lengths. Do you call that close?

Yes, I think it's too close for a V6 versus a V8. Let me put something into perspective for you... a 1/2 second difference between the V6 Camaro and the V8 Mustang is a lot less than the difference between a V6 Camaro and a V6 Mustang. Or let me put it another way... a V8 Mustang will be much farther ahead of a V6 Mustang than it will a V6 Camaro.
You don't have to try to illustrate distances on a drag strip for me. I've been drag racing Mustangs for more than 20 years now. I know that a tenth of a second is approximately a car length for the average street Mustang.

I agree that the base Mustang needs a major overhaul, but keep in mind Ford has the 3.5 that should make it either equal or close to the performance levels of the new V6 Camaro in acceleration. The same should go for new 6 MT/AT...... I only wish I knew why the Fusion is getting them before the Mustang but oh well.
I'm guessing since Ford is starting to put the 3.5 in cars like the Taurus and Fusion it is only a matter of time before they put this in their only real sporty car.

You should be angry then that the current V6 can outrun some of the mustang V8's of the past

If you were in the market for a new car, are you leaning towards either Camaro or Mustang? or something else?

Didn't somebody on here that works at a dealership find something in their computers about the 3.7 being listed for 2010? I tried finding the thread, but had no luck, it's here somewhere though.
As for the Camaro guys, the car looks decent, but their aspirations are pretty lofty. The Camaro's interior looks pretty cheap also, while the 2010 Mustang's looks to be a huge step forward.

Why would anyone be angry about that? It's called progress.... Forget the V6 Mustang for a moment and consider that there are a bunch of other V6 cars out there that will absolutely destroy some of the older V8 Mustangs. And along that line of thought... there are some V6 cars out there right now that will destroy today's V8 Mustang. Sad, but true.

BTW, our debate was centered on stock vehicles. I don't plan on leaving my GT stock, so it's original performance isn't really very important to me.

The Camaro progression used to be V6 --> Z/28 --> SS.
Chevy swapped the last two. Now it's V6 --> SS --> Z/28 (if it ever happens).
So they haven't shot themselves in the foot. The Z/28 could come out with the Vette engine. They had to do this because so many of their other cars use SS to be the sporty version, they wanted to stay consistent.

I would be shocked (and a little worried about the sanity of Ford decision makers), if they put out a 275 hp V6 and kept the 4.6 for the 2010 model year. Even if they do some significant tweaks that's still a little too close.
As much as I'd love for the new V6 to be in the 2010 (current lease is up in June), it just doesn't make any sense at all for Ford to do it.

What V6 under 30k is seeing the GT? It sure as hell isnt the 350z or the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Maybe the Mazdaspeed 6. The SRT4 was the only thing under 30k that could pull that off in the last couple years since the Camaro and Firebird died, and it died shortly after. Anything else is in another price ballpark than the Mustang. And if thats the case, throw in a 5k supercharger and walk with it.

Simple-- it's not just '05. It's now 2008 and the 2009 Mustangs are already on the streets. And the 2010 lineup is expected to have the same engines, despite a "refreshed" styling of the body. Therefore, my comparison makes perfect sense. Forget about '05.
