I guess the lesson learned is: if you disable the factory speed limiter to make top speed runs you're going to eventually pay the price, either paying the repair bill after bad stuff happens or upgrading to a stronger aftermarket part before something bad happens.

It's funny how this video has spread like wildfire all over the internet as "proof" of inferior Ford/American engineering. How is it bad engineering when Ford put a speed limiter in place to prevent problems with this light duty piece in the first place?

The comments on Autoblog, etc about this video are pure idiocy. We don't know the history of this car and how many times it's been abused.

The Autoblog peanut gallery all moan about how the V6 Mustang is only limited to 112 mph and how <riceburner/eurotrash> X can top out higher than that , but even with that the V6 Mustang was able to beat the WRX and Evo around a road course while hitting the speed limiter in Car & Driver's tests, so who cares unless your making runs at Bonneville...

I still don't see how this is fords faul, or that the driveshaft is a "POS" if this won't happen under normal driving, next people will be calling the v6 engine a POS when they add 300hp to it and it blows.
Well said! If I owned a Mustang and drove it in Germany at autoban speeds, I'd be concerned. I'm betting Ford will strengthen the driveshaft when the Mustang V6 is marketed there.

However, there are no "legal" places to drive a car at speeds that make a driveshaft explode, so how can Ford be blamed for this, and/or call the driveshaft a POS? Let's get real folks. Should I complain that my V6 equipped F150 won't pull my house off ot's foundation, and refer to it as junk? Nope, it was not designed nor intended for that type of use. Same with a V6 Mustang driveshaft and speeds over 130 MPH.

135mph is about 215km/h and sometimes you can drive that or more on our Autobahn but most about 100mph.
anyway i could swear if those Stangs were sell to us in greater numbers those failures would nibble on Fords reputation a lot.

THIS could be easy to avoid and alone those noise which someone stated here at decelerating pointed to a bad balanced shaft or to much tolerances.

Ford must fix that immediately and it should really be easy after 100year of car evolution.

my fiesta had no problems at +118 mph

I appreciated the pictures of the driveshafts. Now I understand what those are taking about when they say the V6 has a single piece driveshaft.
I have not driven a V6, but I remember driving some Ford and Chevy cars with straight sixes. I always thought the straight six cars felt like the driveshaft flexed when those cars were driven hard. I always wondered why six cylinder driveshaft cars felt so different than V8 cars when accelerated hard. Therefore, I never bought a six cylinder car. I have to drive a modern V6 to see how they feel now.
Does anyone know what the reason is why Ford would use a different type driveshaft behind the V6 than the V8 ? I would think Ford could save money using the same type driveshaft on both the V6 and V8.

The only situation in the USA where you'll be traveling at more than 112mph, legally, is also one in which you will have long since replaced the driveshaft. Therefore, man in video is an idiot. First, for breaking the law and posting evidence of it (I really hope he gets arrested for that), and second, for taking the car beyond its factory limits without strengthening the drivetrain, which is the first thing any self-respecting car guy with an IQ of more than 70 does.

Sometimes I think America really does deserve a good nuking. It's full of idiots like that guy.

so let me get this straight..

the 3.7L now comes with a 160 mph speedometer, the 18" & 19" tires are W rated @ 168 mph, it has an 8.8" traction loc rear, same brakes & suspension as the '05-'10 GT, dual exhaust, 300 hp motor, etc.. but the same 4.0L driveshaft that turns into spaghetti as soon as you push it .. what's wrong with this picture?

oh wait.. a 112 speed limiter.. problem solved

IMO, the driveshaft grenading is probably pretty low on the list of things that could go wrong when somebody is doing a banzai run.

I've run 100+ in several makes and models (performance cars and regular passenger cars) and I've never run into this problem.

Still though, even if Ford has a limiter in there to prevent the driveshaft from flying apart, from a good faith point, Ford should correct the problem going forward.

You guys know it is against the law to speed

My one piece aluminum driveshaft is on the UPS truck to be delivered today.

I would cut the rubber section to see whats in there but i'll have to store it so i can reinstall it when and if i ever sell or trade my Mustang.

I think that if the Flux Capacitor wouldn't of burned out at 88mph, he would of been fine.

that was fast!.. forget about just the strength.. the aluminum DS only weights 17 lbs,
you're gonna notice a nice diff in acceleration the first time you drive with it.
don't forget to put tread loc on the 12mm bolts b4 you put them back on, you don't want the new one coming off
