Geico Dropped Me

Got my renewal for my other vehicles today but it was missing my the stang. I called Geico:

Me: "Why is my mustang not on this policy anymore?"

Them:"Sir let me check. Sir we cannot insure cars that have modifications done to them."

Me: "Um ok, you just lost your business for my other vehicles as well."

So can anyone tell me how the hell they figured out I have added mods? I haven't been to Ford for service since I have only 3k miles. No DMV or inspections on the car.

I believe your signature says it all: Title: Performance Mods. Everyone, insurance, manufacturers, and dealers, look at these sites. Just a thought.

Google search your car's VIN and see if anything comes up.

Google search your forum handle.

Normally Google is your friend but in this instance it is not.

Better yet, search for your full legal name that Geico would have you listed under.

Everyone should do that occasionally, you'd be surprised what's out there

Personally, I would press and press and press them to find out where they got that info from and why that would make any difference for insurance. Keep escalating it up the management chain until somebody comes clean on where they are snooping around.

Geico used to drop people who owned radar detectors, so this doesn't surprise me at all.

Classic Geico.
At least they didn't drop you entirely. That's how they would really hurt people. An insurance company dropping someone becomes a huge black mark and I remember the articles in C&D and R&T in the 1980s on how Geico would do that. They also buy cops radar/laser guns. They are the most evil insurance company.

How did they know? Could be as simple as someone driving out to look at your car. Or if you had some of the work done at a shop it may have come up on some database they have access to. Or maybe you checked 'yes' on a form somewhere.

I'm guessing that talking lizard ratted you out.

Seriously, ask them what mods they're talking about and see what they come up with.

That's crazy, I use USAA and they cover the car and $5000 in mods for the same price as a stock car. And they are way cheaper (for me).

I've pretty much never owned a car without some mods. I don't understand even a little bit how they come up with, "We can't insure your car if it's modded!" So if you upgrade the stereo, your cancelled. Change the wheels... cancelled. Add a chin spoiler..... freakin' gone. Strange decision on their part.

All those and a FULL Carfax. You'd be surprised what the Carfax shows. I could not believe it when I did it, in that it shows *every oil change I've done to Awesome*... I felt a little violated. The freakin' oil change places send in a "he got the oil changed" report.

So yeah... they're watching you, like a hawk.. a hawk that has learned how to use a long range gunsight. Which is what I said about the NSA stuff... if you think the NSA is your worst problem, you are seriously not thinking straight about your internet, credit cards, bank, groceries... why do you think they want you to sign up for their shopper card?

Anyway... they know... they always know. Worse than Santa.

I have extra insurance on mine with Nationwide Ins. for "additional accessories." Not an issue at all. I've been with them for a long time, so I have a bunch of discounts.

Make sure you're getting all your discounts, too. The passive alarm system, passive restraint system (airbags), long term, safe driver, homeowner ins. including alarm system, extra discount from my credit union, etc...

I suppose the person who made the policy figures that if someone makes modifications, they're going to drive the car like a hooligan and crash it. You know, like in Fast & Furious or The Dukes of Hazzard.
