Gears question, need opinions
This wont be a question about which gears to get (I have 2.73's now) but rather where I should get them done.
I got an estimate from a known speed shop in town of approx $1000 (700 of it labor, 300 gears+fluids)
I got another estimate from the local Ford dealership. $1200 for the same job.
So, whats the better deal? I would think a speed shop (Goodies in San Jose, if anyone cares) that has enthusiasts who do this type of work day in and out might be better than the "technicians" at a dealership, thoughts?
The Speedshop also mentioned a 500 mile service (after install) for about $150 to verify installation went well, seems like it was not optional..The ford dealership did not mention any such service.
Finally, is $1000-1200 reasonable for this service? I'm an apartment dweller, in a city, and have no resources to do this myself, plus living where I do, prices could be somewhat inflated.
Thanks for any input on this

Do those prices include a handheld tuner device to reset the computer for the new gear?
If not, both prices are OUT-FREAKIN-RAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!
Last gears I got setup, labor was $200.
Parts-wise, the gears can be had in the $165 range and the only other parts you should need would be some new gear lube, maybe $15, and pinion bearings and seal, about $20 and a little RTV.
You will need some way to correct the speedo, either a tuner such as SCT X3, about $380, or Ford Racing offers a speedo correction calibrator for about $150.
The great thing about the SCT X3 is that you get a great new tune to go along with it that will make that auto tranny work so much better than stock.
