Gear rattle after oil change?

How much gear rattle is normal for a 2014 3.7 manual? I never noticed it until I had the dealer do an oil change. It was the first thing I noticed when I started the car.

Or perhaps it's something different? Sounds like ball bearings in a blender, but only in neutral. Noise changes as rpms increase.

It shouldn't sound harsh at all unless there's the wrong fluid, metal in the case, bearings are shot, or gears are eaten.

There will be a little noise, a hum, if you will, sort of very background. But no way it should ever sound like marbles in a blender. It sounds like there's something bouncing around or barely meeting.

That the noise changes is natural because whirring gears, but that doesn't mean anything. The noise being there at all is concerning. Go get it fixed.

Yes. Whether or not it was happening before the oil change is not known, but I don't remember ever hearing it before hand (and it was the FIRST thing I noticed when I drove off).

It's not the loudest thing in the world but I can definitely hear it. I already changed the oil myself much earlier and didn't notice any change. I can't imagine they touched the gearbox fluid, especially for what they charged me.

Go back to where you had the oil change and see if something went wrong or they didn't tell you something.

I'll probably take it to the local dealer first. Only reason I went to this dealer was for the free oil change since I bought the car from, it's a 40 minute drive each way. I'm more impressed with the local dealer's service department anyways.

Possibly the wrong filter was used, when the oil was changed.

Sounds like someone took your Mustang 'out for lunch' and ran the dog pee out of it

I'm coming up to my second oil change... car still seems to drive and sound like it did prior. Hope nothing major is wrong!

Also not likely as mileage was close to when I brought it in.

Hopefully nothing major is wrong, but it seems that other dealership did something wrong. Very unlikely that when it was at the dealer something in your car decided to go wrong just by getting an oil change.

Well it's at the dealer now. Service advisor couldn't hear anything, but he sent it to a tech. Said it would take a couple hours and it's been six... Not sure if that's good or bad.

Hopefully they don't make me wait all day and tell me it's normal (or that they can't hear it).

Let me know what they say, Joeywhat. If they can’t hear it, try to show it to them yourself if possible.

Survey says: throwout bearing. Part is on order.

Wish it didn't take 8 hours and three techs to get that diagnosis, but oh well. I went up this evening to take a ride with tech #2 who couldn't hear anything, and even when pointing it out he couldn't hear any difference. Tech #3 (who looks like he's been around the block a few times...) steps right into the car, and 5 seconds later says "yep, throwout bearing".

Well, anyways it should be fixed by Saturday, assuming the part gets here on time.

Glad to learn it’s being handled for you, Joeywhat.
