FORD MUSTANG 2005 UP Custom Sill Plates
FORD MUSTANG 2005 UP Custom Sill Plates
I had previously read somewhere that you can get custom sill plates made. I've now found out where you can get those from, and thought I would post it for those of you who didn't know where to look or maybe didn't now about this and might be interested.

Found a short article on them on page 100 of the June 2010 issue of 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords magazine.

I plan on ordering some later this year. I think it's a neat way to customize the car without spending a ton of cash.
If you order, be darn sure you order the right ones. Pretty sure there will be no returns on these.

Just got my custom sill plates in. They look great. Not sure how close a match they are in color yet, but I think it should be right on target, as I think it comes from the same supplier that makes the stock ones.
It's nice to finally have a piece of my car. :P Supposedly my Mustang order is in transit now (for real) and will be in within a couple of weeks. Yay! After I install the new sill plates, I'll make another post to say how it went.

I finally had a moment to take a couple pics. Here they are. I believe the extra wiring and stuff in the first pic is for pre-2010 cars. 2010+ are supposed to just plug in and be done.
As you can probably guess, these plates are Stone with Ambient Lighting. In addition to the text and font in the middle, the logo and/or text on the sides can be customized as well; you can pick from some existing logos and styled text (which is what we did), or write custom text there as well.
Edit: Another piece of info I should have included -- From order to delivery took about 1 month.

Anyone ever done any testing or experimentation on power for the ambient lit sill plates? I was curious to see if I could get the illumination to work just for kicks. The plugs have 4 conductors. I assume there is 3 LEDs, with 1 conductor for each LED, and 1 common ground. 3 LEDs would give 7 possible ambient colors, which I think is what it's supposed to have.
Started with a multimeter, measuring resistance across different conductors. Diodes only allow power through in one direction, so each possible combo I tried in both directions. I tested every combo and never got a reading. My guess is even with power going in the "correct" direction, there is perhaps still some threshold of power that has to be obtained before the diodes let anything through. Anyone with EE experience have any thoughts?
Also, does anyone happen to know how much voltage is supposed to go to the sill plates? A full 12 volts?

It looks almost same as the ones for 05-09 models. Still, the asking price is a little too much to me. I remember there is some video in the internet showing a handy guy put this thing in his mustang.
I installed the custom sill plates today.
I found it easiest to remove the old ones by first pulling up along the inner front edge of the plate. If you look at the picture of the back of the custom sill plate, note that there is one trim connector with a rectangular blue grommet. This connector goes towards the back. Pulling the old sill plate up from the front, I could easily pop out the first three connectors (the ones with black grommets). From there, it was easy to pull up the outer edge (which is held with sticky tape) and unhook the electrical connector. However, the last connector (with the blue grommet) is a real pain to get out. On both sides, I ended up breaking the connector away from the old sill plate. After it broke, I was able to pull out the old connector by grabbing it with vice grips and rocking it back and forth.
With the old plates off, installing the new ones was very simple. After cleaning where the tape sticks down, it was as simple as attaching the electrical connector and then pressing the new piece in firmly to seat all the new connectors and sticky tape. (I checked to ensure the illumination was working before seating the new pieces down; something you may wish to do as well if you take on this task).
I'll probably post a few more pictures later as soon as I find my cable for my camera.

Plastic panel-popper tools would have made removing the old ones easier, and probably not have broken them. Just FYI for other people looking to do this. Let's see those pics!
