11 year BITOG'er here. On all my Hondas, I've gone with the oil life monitors and that has served me well, including the high strung Civic Si I had. That's no substitute for preventive maintenance, though, and keeping a check on your oil level. But in the end, yeah, do what you like. I'll just say I'm excited to have a motor that takes 8 qts of oil! That really makes me feel better about the whole proposition vs. the 4-4.5 I'm used to w/ all the Hondas I've owned.
I actually paid for the maintenance plan, or whatever, for my GT, and got the 5000 mile intervals. Let someone else change it for once and keep it fresh. I'll use up my oil stash on the Hondas. I'm all highway miles so after almost 2k miles I'm still at 96%.

When oil life monitors first came out they were very simple and not too be used as gospel. They are much more advanced nowadays and are a good baseline. That said, they're still not magical. I doubt mine will ever see enough miles to change more than annually, whether that be 3000 or 10000 miles.

I was afraid this battle would happen... It is a DD, about 15 miles a day 5x a week. I really don't drive it that much, as we have a family car that we drive on the weekends so my husband's Mustang doesn't get driven that much either. I have been all for going with the manual, but my husband is one of those 3000 mile believers and has been giving me non stop grief for not doing it yet. Ford even called me last week to schedule an appointment, but I told them no as I don't drive it that much. We are both car people, and mustangs are how we met, but this is one thing we just don't agree on. I think it stems from that whole life time transmission fluid thing they have going now too. We have a Mazda cx9 where we just hit 75, 000 where it said life time and oh was it horrid... runs much smoother now. At this point I have had my thoughts reassured. I plan on waiting, but I do think I will go full synthetic at the change. I feel like since I already went all out on buying this car, I might as well keep it up... treat it a little better than my last Mustang. Now I just have to get him to cool his jets on me lowering it...

Bro, that's freaking awesome. Most likely that's not going too change that husband's mind. I'm sure he grew up where his father changed the oil every 3,000 miles, so its gospel. It was and is embedded into his mind. Lol!

The oil monitor is based on semi-synthetic blend oil which is rated up to 10K between oil changes. If you use full synthetic, you can either continue to use the oil monitor and change it at up to 10K, or add in a few extra miles over the monitor before changing it.
The DivaDanielle speaks the truth here; the mods will shut this down. They don't seem to like oil threads or oil discussions on this site. It seems those who are bothered by oil threads don't pass by these posts, but rather complain about them, post their complaints about them in the thread, and then get them shut down.

I'd do the first change at 1,000 to get any casting flash out of the oil (ever seen the amount of metal flakes in the oil at 1,000 miles on a new engine?) and then since it's full synthetic I'd play it safe and do it again at 5,000 and then every 5,000 miles after.
If it were conventional, I'd stick to conventional wisdom and go every 3,000 miles or 12 months (as I do for my oldskool summer car).

When I was using royal purple I changed the filter every 5k and oil and filter every 10k

I do love these oil change threads, almost as good as the Ecoboost vs. the 5.0L over on the F-150 forum. In my mind it's not worth the battle to get your hubby to change his mind. You know how we are. Ford has what they call "The Works" package, oil, filter, tire rotation, and a 21 point inspection for $39.95 over on the Ford Owners web site. Plus if you join the Owners club (free) after you buy 5 the 6th is free. Then everybody be happy, happy, happy.
BTW, from time to time Ford will put a $10 rebates on the oil change package.

I changed the oil on my 2014 GT today for the first time with 4,689 miles on it. I bought the car in August of 2013 and the car was built in 02/2013. The car was a year old and is why I changed the oil when I did. The OLM was down to 43%.
I will probably just do yearly changes since this is not a daily driver and probably won't get that many miles a year put on it but I'm not against using the OLM. The original oil still looked pretty good.
I refilled with 5W-20 Motorcraft and a FL500s Motorcraft filter. I noticed that the original oil filter installed at the factory was slightly longer than the recommended FL500s.

Yep, the oil filters are longer from the factory. I thought my Motorcraft FL500S was made wrong until i checked other filters they had at my local parts store. My Dad's 2010 Taurus also had a longer oil filter from the factory.
