Does anyone else not give a **** about a fancy shmancy interior?

The beauty of this is that when the next generation Mustang comes out I can almost 100% guarantee that the new interior will have better materials. I mean the Taurus, Focus, Fiesta and Fusion will attest to this. Not to mention the new Edge and Explorer. Ford is really making a push to have competitive interiors. These cars need to go global and this is the plan for FoMoCo. About time...

That's my biggest gripe with my g/f's GT, maybe the aftermarket will make some blacked out accents to replace the chrome ones.
The acrimony of the title of this thread is annoying. I think I'll start a new thread entitled, "Does anyone else not give a **** about a plain-Jane, ghetto interior?"
Just sayin'.

I travel around the country quite a bit for my employer.
I was soooo close to buying an 08 Bullit Mustang, but I just felt the interior was a disappointment in my rental cars. Granted the Bullit had premium features above your average rental car, but not enough for me to sign on the dotted line.
When the Mustang was redesigned in 2010, it was enough of a change for me to make the jump.
Now as an owner, I love Sync and demand a Ford rental vehicle whenever I can.

I am old and spolied, so I do like the nice, above average interior with leather, stereo, tilt wheel (would also like telescoping). But I would also like the option to build the car my way, without all the packages. Just list the individual opetions like they used to, so I could have HID's without all the other junk in the package.
With that said, back in the day you could also buy a "base" stripper model, with cloth seats, rubber mats (no carpet) wind up windows, steel wheels with hub caps, well you get it, basically nothing but the car.
However, you could also order the biggest V8 made by the company in the stripper...we called them "sleepers", because they looked like taxi's. Cops never even noticed them. You could also order the police package on a four door sedan, now that was fun. Plain Jane, family car, no spoliers, or tape stripes, just one fast car that no one really noticed, except other car guys.....should I have said car people
Today, everything is about packages. You really don't have much choice if you think about it. Works for the manufacturer because it is cheaper, but not for the consumer, who is stuck paying for options they really don't want or need, in order to get the one option they wanted.

Interesting feedback. I guess I expected Mustang folks to be a lot more interested in actual driving...but I was mistaken.
I realize that I'm in the minority but IMO a muscle car should be a muscle car...If I wanted a plush interior, I would have bought...err...leased some euro sedan.
I'm not saying that I want bare sheetmetal and exposed wiring... but something like an ergonimcally updated 1970 Mustang interior...with materials that hold up a bit better to long term wear and tear...would be just fine for me.
I don't need to carry around a screen in my dashboard...if I need GPS, I can whip out my smartphone or bring along the Garmin. Back up camera? Umm...I can still turn my head around to look out the rear window.
I'm glad you guys are able to get the options/gizmos and junk that you want... I just think you're all crazy.

If we were talking about a Dodge Viper, Lotus Elise, or some other car that is just a race track toy, I'd be with you MRGTX. But it doesn't suit my lifestyle to have one car for racing around in and another for everyday use. I wanted a car that is beautiful, fun to drive fast, reliable, and comfortable. When I go on a 4,000 mile road trip I really enjoy a nice stereo, Sync, and all the other fancy shmancy stuff.
If all a person cares about is the performance characteristics, why buy a new Mustang GT? You could buy a 10-20 year old Corvette, mod it and have something that is substantially faster than a stock 2011 GT and have a lot of money leftover.

I didn't get my 2012 mustang yet (hopefully by the end of this month) but I think this is a very interesting topic. sure, the material in the doors and a few other places COULD be nicer and softer to the touch. but I look at it from a totally different angle. well maybe cause I have been dreaming about a car like this for so long
well I agree, some of the interiors of european cars are really nicely made. but also look at what their price tags. someone mentioed the VW golf GTI. the base price for this car here in switzerland is almost 42'000 francs or with the current exchange rate over 50'000 US dollars. this will be without leather seats and some of the options you might want..so you easily spend an additional 10'000 cause options on german cars are never cheap. I think you already get my point...if I would want a european car that has an engine like the new mustang 5.0 does...I would be in the 120'000 region.
so therefore I think the mustang (even if I pay a lot more for it over here) is an incredible value for money, plus..I will be driving an american icon

Upscale
I have to admit, I LIKE all the goodies. Makes for a nice road trip car( did a New Orleans to OKC & back ) one of the best combo's of comfort, mileage and looks out there today, IMHO......
I think the interior is one of the most important parts of the car, you basically live in it.
There is no way you can drive outside of the car so yes interior is pretty important for a driver.
Especially a daily driver, it's 2011 nobody wants to drive around in a plan old nothingness interior.
love mine!

i also agree but yes MINIMAL chrome, there is a place and limit for chrome and bling of any kind, interior should be nice, but also subtle
Yeah, yeah, yeah...A square is a rectangle but not all rectangles are squares...I can draw you a Venn diagram if it will help.

V8 Mustangs have historically been muscle cars...well, at least since 302, 351, 390, 428, 429 etc. models have been available. Regardless, it's an arbitrary title.
Regardless, a Muscle car/Pony car makes a crappy luxury car. I don't begrudge anyone who likes the "premium" interior but these cars have always taken flack for cheesy leather and tacky accoutrements...because they're cheap. Affordable, stylish performance is the priority of the design...not quiet, plush comfort. The current cars absolutely have the "nicest" interiors ever put in a Mustang but they're still light years behind the Euro cars.
I recently heard the door pannels described as being similar to a plastic trash can lid... and it's pretty apt. That's fine with me.

My point is- why bother? If you wanted a sporty luxury car, you could have spent the same money on a 2-3 year old BMW 3 series... gotten 80% of the performance and VASTLY better interior.
Option the car to keep it in its wheelhouse...going like hell, pulling like a dragster..while being a car you can drive to work every day and afford to keep on the road.

So...the Mustang stands as the BEST cheap/daily driver-worthy/semi-hardcore performance car that fits my needs. 22-26mpg, 400hp, extremely usable trunk, not too exotic to leave unattended in a parking lot, COULD be driven in the winter if necessary...yet still absolutely shreds the back roads and the straights....and it has a warranty.
I will go to the grave insisting that the car excels by those criteria but will always seem cheesy when people try to make it a luxury car.
Purely my opinion. I really do like the upgraded interiors... but I'd never spend my money on those options.

I would say with the premium interior you get about 80% (85% with the excellent NAV) of the luxury of a 335i. plus you get 30% more horsepower and torque all at 60% of the price. i think the additional features in the premium are a no brainer, why not get some luxury on top of your muscle car? There is no shame in wanting only the muscle but most want both.

Thanks for the help Deysha! As for the seat, the dealer is ordering a new track b/c it won't go up or down as of recently. Thankfully it broke right where I need it. When they swap it out next week I'm going to show them the wear. They've been pretty good fixing things so far, if they give me trouble I will let you know.
