Cold temps and Track Pack Pirellis
Cold temps and Track Pack Pirellis
So I took my first road trip to the mountains in my '14 grabber blue Track Pack GT this week and sure enough... we have a stronger than expected snow storm up here (such is life in Colorado). I had her in a heated garage at our condo and we stayed an extra day to let some of this melt, but it's time to go back tomorrow. Road conditions show dry but temps on one of the passes we're going over are at or just over freezing. What experiences have any of you had in cold temps with these Pirelli max performance summer tires and what if any precautions should I take? Thanks all...
Like Mustang Freak said just go easy on the throttle, I've had several cars with summer only tires and they don't like more than and inch or two of snow and its like ridding on four pieces of granite they're so stiff so be prepared for a firm ride!
I was shocked how well these tires stay on the ground when you want them to. I was seeing how much they could handle in the rain the other day launching and stopping and turning they are pretty decent tires despite what a lot of people think about them.
Eaaaasy on the gas. Eaaaasy on the brakes, and no abrupt steering wheel movements. Smooth and easy all the way around. The rubber gets hard and skids way sooner than it normally would.
Yeah they're fine in the cold, they don't have the same grip they would in the summer, but they're still usable.
Snow is a different matter altogether. I got stuck having to drive through a snowstorm with them last winter. Going uphill actually isn't the biggest problem, yeah it's difficult but with a manual trans, traction control, limited-slip you can usually claw your way up. The scary part is when the road has a long stretch of downhill. It seemed like no matter what you do the car just wants to keep sliding. Use the brakes, you start locking up the front wheels. Keep it in first gear to let the engine control your speed, the back end starts sliding out on you.

Thanks for the input all... waited out the snow and got some warmer temps. Was sub 40 on one of the passes but overall it went very well. Was probably more worried than I should have been but I suppose icy mountain passes aren't anything to mess around with in a rear wheel drive beast on summer max performance tires
I didn't. Lol. Re-read my post/s. You mean mention, or reference or imply? If you got "blower" from my post in this thread, that must mean you've been following my thread. Good for you!!! I'm flattered, and you're welcome. Lol
And for the record, can you contribute something useful to this forum other than 7 posts? Err I mean 6 posts? I'll count your 7th one as useless banter. At least my actual post in this thread was advice to the op. Did you even come in and contribute? Or troll?
