Cold running?

Is it just my 2013 5.0 GT that runs like poo when cold or do most stock 5.0 V8's run this way? I'm talking about the bucking and sort of weird erratic rough running when cold. My car idles fine but at times I find it better to start out in second gear (MT) then dealing with the odd behavior in first. Also will a tune improve the cold running drivability?

Is the car modified at all? All cars have a closed loop and open loop program. When cold the car operates in open loop. It will hit closed loop at about 140 degrees operating temperature. I would suspect something like a vacuum leak or an egr issue due to the rough running when cold in open loop. If it runs fine in closed loop the the PCM is compensating for some abnormality.

Other possibility is your PCM needs an update.

If I don't warm it up it will do an occasional buck no matter how lightly I feather the throttle. More so with the 5.0 vs other manuals I have owned.

My buddy has a stock 2012 that suffers from this and he was told is the crank positioning sensor. He hasn't messed with it since it's warmer now, but I would think it would do it all the time if it wad that sensor.

I have the same issue on my 2014, dont be light on the throttle step on it a bit when cold.

And from what I have seen the timming goes to zero when it happens so it might be the crank sensor.

This is true but I don't want to annoy my neighbors cause the roush mufflers are pretty loud when initially taking off I usually just shift to second real quick when taking off from home and go light until I get to the main road

The reason your car is bucking is because you need to let the cats warm up. When your start your car, it will idle between 1500 and 2000 RPM. Let it idle there until it drops down to about 900 RPM. This should take about 20 seconds or so. Your car should drive normal after this.
