Car & Driver Lightning Lap 2011

2011 Mustang V6 3.12.5
2011 Mustang GT 3:08.6
2011 GT500 SVTPP 3:04.0

Nice comparison since all cars where ran the same day. I find it interesting they mention the GT500's grinding during shifting in the GT section and praise the GT for not doing the same thing. A big plus for the GT500 is that the car seems not suffer so much from heat soak anymore.

I put my order in for a 2012 GT today. I think I made the right choice instead of looking for a used 2011 GT500.

Taking the LL1 crown this year and tying the class-record time of 3:12.5 was Ford’s 305-hp V-6 Mustang. We have little doubt that it could have unseated the co–class-champ 2006 Nissan 350Z Track if the Ford hadn’t been equipped with a 114-mph governor, which the car banged into for more than 15 seconds per lap. Yet despite the interference of the electric anchor, the new V-6–powered car still managed to beat last year’s 315-hp V-8 Mustang by 0.8 second.

Very interesting.. it beat the 10 gt even with the speed limiter.

Haha, I'm happy to see the gt500 beat the CTS-V coupe...even if it was by a smidge. Too bad about the shifting problems though.

I would like to have seen it run the same day. Track conditions can make times vary by several seconds. Awesome performance from all three mustangs!

Thank you C&D for answering my request, I really wanted to see all three Mustangs at the event this year, and yeah the Z06 is a hella good car, although the Z07 option makes it a bit on the pricey side. IMO, I'd just be happy to get the PS2s on a the base car as a standard fitment.

Yeah I know that Z06 is bad. Would have been interesting to see what the V6 stang did without the speed liimiter.

Next year I hope the include the Boss 302 LS to see how it stacks up to the competition. Actually I can't imagine them not including it.

I wonder who got the 2:58.5 second lap in the same car that only got 3:04 seconds. Maybe he or she should drive for Car and Driver. Just magazine racing......have fun.

Well the nice thing about this Magazine race is all the cars in this article were driven at the same event by the same drivers. Making for a more even comparison. Given the issues they had shifting the GT500 there might be another second or two to squeeze out of it.

Soon after I got my '11 GT, I met up with a friend who had recently bought an almost-new 2007 Z06 and we drove each other's cars. The Z06 is simply Reee-diculous in speed and chassis tightness. For my older bones and considering my kids, I still prefer my GT for street, but that Z06 screamed "take me to VIR!". Unfortunately the Z06's el-cheapo interior screamed "Chevy Cavalier!"

My friend wanted me to experience the active exhaust on the Z06 which he said opened up above 4000 at WOT. In the suburban conditions we drove, we simply could not get it past 4K rpm thanks to traffic and random cops. Fortunately he demonstrated the exhaust anyway, via the "Wife switch" he'd installed. Wished I had one of those on my GT (but am now happy with my GT500 mufflers!).

The V-6 Mustang isn't that fast Ford engineers made a mistake and should have set the speedlimiter to 101m.p.h. Everyone knows the V-6 Mustang is for Girls, poor people and retarded people

bpmurr: Thank you for the posting--and thank you, Car & Driver, for conducting the Lightning Lap and including the base V6 Mustang, the Mustang GT, and the GT500. It would have been perfect if they had included the GT350, the Boss 302, and the Boss 302 Laguna Seca, but the two Bosses probably couldn't have been available by the testing date(s). I think it was Hot Rod Magazine that found the GT350 to be faster than the GT500...

I wish they had included the "NEW" 312 HP V6 Camaro for laughs!

In my GT, the MYKEY setting says V6 on the menu when I want a valet key.

Wow, talk about not being pc..... retarded people drive challengers!

I drove a v6 stang before getting the 5.0. I was so completely impressed with the 6 that I very seriously considered it. This is my 7th stang and the only one where a 6 was considered. I absolutely might have purchased one if the handling package was available at that time!

David, watched your youtube run. Seems to pull strongly. I'd be interested in an actual top speed run. Of course your tires speed capacity would be a safety consideration.

I don't have any safe place to try that. I read on other Mustang forums some V-6's have gone over 150 and still not topped out.

Where would one think the Boss would place? 2.58-3.0? Better? Worse? One would think it would have to handily beat (by a few seconds) the GT500, as it's purpose built...
