This is the best way to go for sure. you do it yourself and know what and how its been done and you save a little bit of cash every bit of the way!

My wife's Santa Fe got its first oil change a month or two ago, I looked under the hood and found a whole bunch of oil deposits all over the engine cover. almost as if the technicians didn't know how to use a funnel. went back and freaked out. its just unacceptable, especially on a new car!

and that's another reason to do it yourself!

Yeah I'm wondering if during the winter months when the pistons were slapping the cylinder walls for like 20 minutes on the way to work, if oil was blowing by and getting burned with the air and fuel.

Instead of blowby it could be coming in through the intake, that is if the issue continues to happen.

First time I've heard of piston slap in a Roadrunner engine.

I worry about that so I just pay for changes while under warranty, but you really have to double-check their work.

I wiped down the whole engine bay before bringing mine in last time and what do I find when I check their work? Oil drops all over the place. Are you out of rags, slackers???

Valvoline will measure it out right in front in a big @ss marked jug and even get your confirmation before they pour it. They run a tight ship. You should check them out.

It’s natural for an engine to use more oil in cold weather climates during the winter. Piston/cylinder wall clearances are wider when the engine is cold but tighten up quickly as they warm, not 20 minutes. That said, your engine should never have gone through 4 quarts of oil in 3,000 miles. A quart ever 1000 miles or so and I think you’d see a puff of smoke here and there and blow-by would be nearly overwhelming the PCV and turning the oil black as coal. Something odd going on there and seemingly not with your engine! In the winter my old Taurus with 187,000 miles on it goes through 1 quart every 3,000 miles. Summer it uses almost nothing. My Coyote uses about a quart every 4000 miles and is quiet as a mouse on Mobil 1 full syn. 5-30.

Interesting... searched 'piston slap boss' and the OP has 3 threads started about it. https://themustangsource.com/f813/co...3/#post6738443

Just wanted to chime in. I hit 1000 miles on my new GT today, the oil is still dead center on the dipstick.

How low on the dipstick was yours when it was a quart down?

I don't put lot of miles on my GT-TP so I still have the original oil in it with about 1800 miles on the clock. The last time i checked i was down to about 40% oil life and when i started it up today I got a change oil now warning. I checked the level but it was hard to get a good reading since I had just run the motor so I'll check it cold tomorrow. The only thing I can think of is that today was the car's 1 year birthday and maybe there is a calendar setting to the oil minder. I reset it to 40% to avoid the warning coming up but plan on changing it at 3,000 miles. Normally I'd have the dealer do it but I'm concerned about them either not putting in the 5w50 or not putting the 8 qts in so I'm just going to do it myself. If you watch the sales you can get good deals at NAPA on Mobil 1 5w50 and it's next to impossible to find that grade anywhere else except at Ford. Also, Ford could have come up with a better setup for the dipstick - right under the cross brace.

Yea not betting there's much piston slap going. In the stock configuration these motors only have .0009"-.0023" clearance total (.00045"-.00115" per side)
Once you go forged there will be some slap but still the pistons heat up and expand pretty quick.

I recall a 2012 Boss owner posting about excessive oil consumption on his Boss, possibly as much as 1qt per 1000 miles. After the dealer told him this falls in the "normal range" he sold/traded it in.

The hash on the stick between the dots is supposed to be 1/2 a qt, so keep an eye on the level every time you get gas, which should be 3-4 fill ups for your next 1000 miles. If your engine really did use that much oil, the level should start creeping down the stick at a noticeable rate.

If indeed your Boss seems to be 'eating' it, the first thing I would do is install a catch can on the passenger side. I would want to know if my engine was for some reason literally sucking it out of the pan and burning it through the intake rather than it burning up past leaky valve guides or rings. These modern engines should not be doing this with so few miles, so you have to wonder if there is a faulty part somewhere?

Let's hope the last fill was only 5qts, running it a little low w/o any racing or hard use for a short time shouldn't have damaged the engine.

Did you try a forum search here on TMS for "boss 302 oil" ?

that was me. When we did the oil consumption test I had to bring he car into a Ford dealer at 1000 mile intervals for an oil level check. I was going thru 1 qt every 1000 miles. So every 8,500 miles I had a complete oil change!!

I believe it was to the bottom of the hatch marks.

Yeah guys it wasn't 3,000 miles... it was 5,000 miles... so we're thinking roughly a quart every thousand miles.

The oil life minder does have a calendar time limit on it as well, mine goes off every 12 months, as I usually don't hit the mileage limit.

my new 2014 used about a quart before 3000 miles but hasn't used a drop since and I'm now at 7100 and some change (purchased 4/1/2014). With less than 250 miles on it, it went auto crossing and has been driven pretty hard.

Ford's explanation for my oil consumption on my Boss was that it was not driven long enough (proper temp) and hard enough to properly seat the rings....

Wow... Well I'm dropping it off next week and am hoping Ford will find a good answer and, if a problem, a solution.

Please let us know what they say! I hope they don't try to tell you the same thing. if they do try to tell you that its "normal" it would make me wonder why you someone didn't to tell you about it this maybe happening, so that you could keep an eye on the fluid levels or possibly have you come in sooner initially to make sure that you were driving around so low.
