Boss 302 ate 4 quarts of oil

So, I do NOT check my oil often. As long as I'm not seeing any leak, I don't check. I've never had a problem in the past, so why expect one on a newer car.

This last weekend, I drove from Houston to DFW. She IS due for an oil change (5k between) in the next hundred miles. Daily driven. 29,000mi on the odo. Enough facts.

While I was up there, the display started reading "change oil fluid." I went to check the oil. NOTHING on the dipstick! Maybe the just the tip.
I went to AutoZone and bought whatever 5w50 they had, Castrol. I put a full 4 quarts in before it topped off.

4 quarts!? There is NOTHING leaking. and there is no oil residue in the exhaust tips. I do NOT have an oil separator either.

I know the 5.0L eats oil... but 4 quarts!?

Any ideas? Thanks y'all.

Did you have it changed last time, or did you do it yourself? If you had it done did you check to see the oil was topped off? Some people forget the Mustang takes 8 quarts. Also was it 5W-50 at the last change? My Track Pack ate about 1.5qt of the 5W-20 that came from the factory, but it hasn't consumed any 5W-50 i had my Ford dealer put it at the first oil change.

If it was full, 4qt over 5k miles seems like a lot.

My guess is that you will be watching it a little closer from now on...

Seeing as you don't check it often, I would start monitoring it very closely. Like checking the oil every fill up/every other fill up. If you are indeed burning that much oil, then you have an issue. Most my 5.0 ate up was 1 qt in 5000 miles and that was in break-in.

Right? I had Ford do it last time and although I didn't check the receipt for 5w50, it did say 8 quarts.... I did call and asked them about it and they had told me, "yeah, the mustang, it takes 8.5." ... as in that WAS put in. I'm starting to doubt. I'll check, when I get home, to see if the receipt says 5w50.

Your guess is spot on.

As soon as I posted this tread, I DID go get the oil change from Ford since it was due.
After telling them, 8.5 of 5w50 Synthetic, this is what was printed off.

Well I'm certainly going to check mine later today...I let Ford do the first change at 1000 miles (yeah yeah) and am at 2200 and should probably make sure they got the 8 quarts part right...

At the dealer it's always a service writer that makes the ticket. So if a tech "thinks" they know how much it takes they could put that amount in and the service writer wouldn't know. They service writer just goes off of alldata or whatever Ford dealers might use. So just because a ticket says 8 doesn't always mean it got 8 just sayin. Glad it didn't hurt anything needing that much oil!

So, even though I told Ford to put in the required amount, they may have not? and even though the receipt shows 8 (which is also incorrect). My dad was under the impression that they may have only put 5 in last time... (making it only a quart low by that standard).

Too late to find out what they did or didn't do.

Always check it before you leave the dealership. I know I do.

My solution is to change the oil myself, then I know exactly what was done.

Now I'm gonna check mine! My dealer changed it twice already.

Best to keep those receipts just in case you need to prove that you've been buying oil and changing it yourself in case you run into an issue where you'd need any warranty work done.

This is the best way to go for sure. you do it yourself and know what and how its been done and you save a little bit of cash every bit of the way!

My wife's Santa Fe got its first oil change a month or two ago, I looked under the hood and found a whole bunch of oil deposits all over the engine cover. almost as if the technicians didn't know how to use a funnel. went back and freaked out. its just unacceptable, especially on a new car!

and that's another reason to do it yourself!

Yeah, I still believe Ford has the ability to do their job correctly... but I'm starting to lean the other way.

So yes, I am a little OCD when it comes to my property which is why this really annoyed me when I got home later and checked the oil. By the way though, my dipstick was reading full. So, I suppose all is well.

Oh, and they ALWAYS turn my fill cap upside down... ALWAYS! Why? There was also oil around the dipstick... just annoying.

I would definitely keep an eye on it, checking as often as possible. I had just recently checked my oil as I am a little over 8k and need to change it and it is right at full. You may also want them to check your PCV to make sure you aren't pulling oil through the intake.

Haha I hate it when I see them upside down. Looks like they set their messy oil can down...real nice I never set the oil can on anything but the ground and I always wipe up anything I drip so the cars that leave the shop don't go out looking like that. Some people don't care and most lube techs are just people off the street with minimal car knowledge. The GM dealer I worked at hired 2 quick lube people who didn't even know how to change oil when they started lol

WOW almost $10 per quart for oil??? I always go to Wally world for Mobile 1 Full synthetic or a local parts store when they have it on sale. Then a trip to Autozone for the Mobil1 oil filter and bring it all to the dealership. They charge me $10-15 to change the oil itself so I end up around $30-40 dollars cheaper than they got you for. Save some coin and get the oil yourself and there should be no doubt what type of oil and how much they put in it unless they are blatently dishonest and deceptive ?!? My 06 GT ate like 2 quarts of oil between every oil change, but my 13' is usually down only about 1 quart when I take it to the dealership. I go 6-7K on mobil1 5w-20. I have a JLT oil seperator on the passenger side and it usually has a few Teaspoons of oil in it, not sure where the rest is going????
