Base steering wheel upgrade
Base steering wheel upgrade
Found this company that makes molded covers for the steering wheel spokes on base cars. Makes the spokes look very much like the spokes on premium interior cars. They offer them in a few metal look colors and carbon fibre look as well.

Then you could get a wheelskins leather cover and put it together for a lot less than a new factory leather wheel.
I know a lot of you guys won't like this idea but it is an option...

A wheelskin is $50 and the molded spoke overlays are about $60 so $110 plus shipping and your labor.
Buy Ford Racing has a GT500 wheel for $369 plus shipping. http://www.buyfordracing.com/shop/pr...s_id=636cPath=
You can probably get a less expensive wheel, maybe for $300.
So, $300-$369 for OEM leather covered wheel but with no metal look spoke covers, or $110 for one that would be more like the 2010-2011 premium wheel with leather and the spoke covers.
Worth fooling with???
I think it is.

You could also just get a real one on ebay for about $50 or new for around $130..
after market add-ons never fit right and are nothing like OEM materials.
any 05-09 wheel with work on a 10+ base

Obviously some of the controls (sync and phone) wont work in the base, but still...

And of the 5 used steering wheels that are on ebay, there is only one that I would consider, the other 4 are too crappy for anyone to consider putting on a new car. And who knows how high the bid will end up on it.
My problem with the base wheel isn't the spokes, it is the cheap plastic outer rim. I had the same wheel come on my '08 GT, and within a week, my first modification was to order a Bullitt steering wheel as pictured above. Back then it was significantly less than they go for new now.
I've done the wheelskins wrap on another car in the past, and it felt decent, but looked rather homemade and cheap since on most steering wheels, including wheels like our Mustangs, it is next to impossible to get it to fit/look right over fat spokes.
Personally I'd gladly pay $300 for a better looking factory leather steering wheel (like my Bullitt wheel) on a new $28-30k Mustang GT vs trying to cheap out and save $100-200, but that's just me. If someone can show me a wheelskins installation that actually looks good on an S197 Mustang, I might change my mind.

Now that I have gotten to hold the standard wheel, leather wraping is not necessary for me. I just want to give it some color, and if I can get some cover plates that will almost match the dash trim that I want to replace, I'm golden.
And so I ask again, has anyone actually seen one of these installed?

Maybe I will get the chance to try them out one day, along with the wheelskin and a dash kit.

no one at the car rental would ever notice that in a million years..
