Ford to Reveal 2010 Mustang Shelby GT500 at Detroit?

Some internet sites are reporting that Ford will reveal a new Mustang variant at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in January. During the live reveal of the 2010 Ford Mustang on SPEED TV, Mark Fields hinted that Ford "will reveal yet another chapter in the Mustang story" at the show.

At this point there are several theories running around. One suggests that Mark Field's wording indicates an all-new variant of the Mustang, or a concept that will hint at a future production model. Our best guess, however, is that the "new chapter" Field's referred to is the 2010 Shelby GT500. Spy photos of prototypes have been popping up for months now, and Ford has acknowledged that Mustang variants will survive past the 2009 model year. With the Detroit auto show less than two months away, we'll soon find out.

I doubt they'd show any concept for the next generation yet. Runs too much risk of people holding on for 2014/15 and not bothering to upgrade their 05-09 cars for the 2010+ model. Sales will be slow enough in 2009/10 to do ANYTHING to compromise them further.

I agree. It's far too early to be showing any concepts that hint at the next generation. Heck, the 2010 isn't even officially out, yet.

I don't think they actually meant a Concept for the "Next Generation" Their quote said,
a concept that will hint at a future production model.
I'm thinking something Kinda Like Ford did with the GT-R if Anything, but I'm expecting it to be the GT-500 as they said, and possibly the Eco Boost, Maybe as I posted in one of my other threads, the Pony Express. Only time will tell.

Well, I'm just going by what you quoted in your first post.

2014/15 is a five years off so I don't see an issue with people holding off that long. I am still buying a 2010 and may trade it in for a '14 if I like that version. Actually, I pretty much guarantee I will be trading it in for the next generation. Five years is a long time to hold off for a car. At any rate, I think it will be the GT500, we have already seen spy shots, so it wouldn't make sense for it not to be ready for the 2010 MY.

Well, a lot of people can't - nor necessarily want to - afford to keep trading cars in every four years.

Personally, I'm going to wait till 2012 anyway and see what the Mustang lineup has to offer (Mach 1, etc.). If we start seeing early concepts for the 2014/15 and it looks a lot better than what is available in 2012, then I will definitely wait and skip this refresh.

On the other hand, if the muscle car era looks set to come to an end, and the next generation Mustang goes in a whole new direction and starts to resemble something from The Jettisons (or worse yet, Ford tries to turn it into a Probe again), then I will probably jump in and grab one of the last Shelby GT500s from Ford in 2012/2013.

I am just basing it on the fact that most people get 60 month car loans (or less if they lease). So technically speaking, if you are already have it in your budget for a car payment, then it isn't any more expensive to trade it in for a new car.

Yes, but a lot of those people (buying not leasing) who have budgeted car payments for 60 months are looking forward to the day when they no longer have to make those payments.

Otherwise it's just a big on-going hole in the water. I suspect the strategy you're referring to is going to severely decline over the next 24 to 48 months.

I agree and that extra money will go towards credit card debt or a mortgage payment that went up after their fixed rate portion of their ARM expired.
