auto trans issues

I have 2011 gt with auto, purchased pre-owned from dealer with 43,000. I worked as a Ford Master Tech for 17 years before retirement so I'm not up to date on trans characteristics of this model. There have been minor issues with this mustang but otherwise I am totally satisfied. Trans doesn't seem to have an aggressive shift at hard throttle. I would think that with the power produced by this engine that the shift would be much firmer. I also know Ford implemented 2nd gear takeoff if selector was in 2nd but this car will take off in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, if gear selector is in that particular position. Is this normal for this trans? Also, manually shifting from 1st to 2nd, I experience NO wheel spin and trans does not shift hard. Past experience with AODE in Mark VIII and Tbird, manual shift into 2nd would burn tires off. Anything you can tell me about "normal" characteristics of this trans would be helpful.

The factory set shift points are awful for the automatics and that's the norm. You need a performance tuner and that will give you the shift points your looking for. Firm and great throttle response.

it sounds like you have "Select Shift" in an '11 model? I thought that was intro'ed into the mustang in '13

The transmission part of the pcm "learns" from how the car is driven, so if driven softly for long enough it will adopt those characteristics and takes a lot of hard driving to make it change, but will never act like those older Fords.

A aftermarket tuner/tune will vastly improve the performance.
