The 5.0 "tick" does everybody have it eventually?
#22
Hrrmmm...come to think of it, this is starting to sound like the Mazda Miata 1.8L HLA tick. Sporadically, the hydraulic lash adjusters will run short of oil and go clack clack clack clack...then continue running normally.
As with this 5.0 tick, some folks didn't seem to have it (or didn't notice it) but many did.
The common wisdom was that it happened more frequently under certain conditions (higher temps) and the starting grid at a Spec Miata event was sometimes a symphony of clacking HLAs while the cars idled.
That said, my Miata has been sporadically clacking for 204,000 miles with no issues.
Could this be something similar? I'm not familiar enough with the valvetrain on these engines to know.

Does your ticking/tapping sound as loud as mine? I didnt notice it until second oil change. Here is what it sounds like in my garage and seems to have gotten worse:

Take it to the Dealer, it usually doesn't sound like a rattling tick.

I never thought about it until Jbiggs posted his thread the other day about his problem, but has anyone ever heard about this happening on the F-150s ?

There is many out there with the tick with the F150 5.0, and they have to drill an 1/8 inch hole in the after-cooler on the Ecoboost, this is the reason I looked for a 6.2 in my F150.

5.0 Coyote tic
It seems like every time this discussion comes up, one or two new folks discover that they too have the tick that they hadn't noticed before...which makes me wonder if all of the 5.0 motors eventually display the mystery/irregular ticking sound.
So far, there is no reason for alarm as all of these cars appear to be running fine... but it's disconcerting.
So do you have the tick in your 5.0?
How many miles?
At how many miles did you get your first oil change?
Are running, or have you ever run a tune?
So my car has 6,800 miles on it, bone stock ecxept for GT500 axle back. Probably unrelated, but I ran a Bama 91 street performance tune for 800-1000 miles before chickened out and went back to stock.
I got my first oil change at 1000 miles (exactly 1000, actually) and have only run Ford's reccommended synthetic blend, changed by the service dept at my dealership.
A few weeks back I noticed a slight irregular ticking sound while I was driving (no idea when it actually started) and sure enough, when I popped the hood, I had the classic irregular tap....tap tap tap........tap...tap, just like the youtube videos.
If you think you DON'T have it, next time you take it for a spin, pop the hood while the car is running after you get home (and the motor is warm)...and have a listen. Some folks say that they only hear it from 1000-2000 RPM but mine happens at idle.
Nobody knows what to make of this tapping yet but it seems to have no bearing on performance. The 5.0 still pulls like a freight train.. only much, much faster.

I think it's funny that Ford officially said it was a operational characteristics and not detrimental to the motor. My son bought a F150 and it has the tic that has got even louder as time goes on. He hardly drives his F150 anymore. He decided it was time for a change of vehicle. Drove his truck to Sioux City to a Ford dealership. When he found a vehicle he intended to trade off for. Now here's where it get funny to me. They did not want to talked his truck in on trade. Told him to sell it himself. And that was all based on the tic in the motor. So if Ford is so convinced that this is nothing to concern ourselves about. Why are their stores refusing to take their product back? The BS of this all just makes me want to scream. And now all my vehicles are going to be Chevrolet.
I also bought a 2020 Hemi R/T, notorious for the Hemi 'tick'. No issues here and the problem is seriously overblown with most owners having no engine trouble with 6 figures on the odometer. Of course there are some engine problems as you can see on YouTube videos, but it's not as common as the internet makes it out to be.
My point?? There is no escape.
