3:73 test drive - rpm's at 60 mph - no response

Hey All,

Somewhere in this forum, I found an xls that tabulated rpms with respective final drives. I test drove a 2012 GT Premium-Brembo-3:73 yesterday and

at 60 mph it tached 2000 rpm in 6th gear

I stomped it to the floor, and the car barely responded, . . . nada. Had to downshift to get anything.

The tach numbers I saw don't seem to match what I find in various posts about the same setup. And, I wonder about no response at 60mph, floored with 412 hp . . .

What are some of you guys with stock cars taching at 60 mph ?

Response in 6th gear?

Thanks

What exactly did you expect to happen in an overdrive gear? LOL

You usually have to be going about 65-70 in 6th to have much response. It's an overdrive gear so there won't be any power whatsoever.

My '11 Brembo GT has 3.73's and tachs just under 2000 rpm's at 60 mph. These motors make tons of power at high rpm's, but under 2000 rpm's there is little power, so you need to downshift to get into the powerband.

2000 RPM's is 66.3 MPH.

6th is a steep overdrive ratio, not meant for acceleration. (0.65 for sixth, 1.00 for 5th)

Based on the chart I have, at 70MPH

6th = 2111 rpm's
5th = 3248 rpms

Downshift to 5th to put it in the sweet spot.

I knew it was overdrive, but I didn't expect dead flat nothin'. Just put it out there to see what others are experiencing.

Yep, that's perfectly normal. The overdrive in American cars is completely different than foreign cars, and is also different from 4cyl or 6cyl cars. Also, if you're used to any type of turbo or supercharged car, there will be a big difference between those and naturally aspirated cars.

This is nothing new, every manual tranmission V8 powered Mustang since 1984, first year of the 5-speed and overdrive gear as we know it, has been exactly like this.

Now if you were driving an Automatic 5.0, this obviously would not have been the case, as it would have dropped to 3rd or 4th gear at 60mph.

It's alright. I like shifting anyway . . . . I'll admit, I'm used to turbos lately - even my turbo diesel truck pulls in 6th gear (yep, it's a manual).

I may be going out on a limb but this could answer the age old question of why cars have more than one gear.

I usually cruise at 75 (80 if no other traffic ), and have enough power in 6th to pass easily on flat ground, but I don't mash the pedal down, I just start pressing it... need to downshift to 5th on an incline, or if "expedited" passing is required...
