2014 Gas Consumption
2014 Gas Consumption
Hi Guys, I Purchased 2014 GT last month and I am very worried about the gas consumption my GT is doing 12 mpg in city . I had 2010 before that and it was doing 15 to 16 mpg.
I talked to the service and they told me to drive more for some months and come back.
Is this normal for new car and would it get better with time?

I saw steady increases with time in my '08 Fusion (v6), '10 Mustang v6 and '10 Taurus... all purchased new. I bought the '12 GT with 7,500 miles and now have a bit over 20,000. Computer says the combined avg mpg is 23.5 (over several thousand miles now), and every now and then I'll see 23.6. Don't get excited yet.

For best economy you need to upshift early, by or before 2000 rpm and get it into 6th gear as soon as possible. And you can "skip-shift", skipping some mid range gears and go more directly into 6th, this can help too.
I just bought my '14 the other day and the mpg readout is on about 17 right now even with me playing with the new toy. Mine will lug itself around at 800 rpm in 6th just cruising with the 3.73's, cars with the 3.31's should still be able to lug around at 1000 rpm in 6th and that will get you better economy.
A heavy right foot and quick starts and stops are what kills fuel economy, drive it super easy and it will do much better.
This may not be the "FUN" way to go, but it is the fuel economy way to go.

All depends on how you drive it. I have done between 6-24 mpg in my last car. With the GT, you're moving 3600+ lbs (without you), with a good sized V8 engine (without direct injection). Easily could be down around 12mpg if you're sitting in traffic and in constant stop & go.
Typically mileage does get a bit better as the car is broken in as well

Probably all in your driving habits.

I'll drive my wife's Smart car to work sometimes for mileage...
Well I am driving very carefully from 15 days and trying my best to shift as early as possible but still its consuming like hell.
@Ltngdrvr your new one is doing great. My first week average was 10 mpg
With 12 mpg with city and lots of stop and start should i worried about it or should i take it to dealer?

I would double your efforts to drive it easier and see what happens. Lots of stops and starts are going to bring it down, is 12 too low for what you're doing? Hard to tell, best to just try some of the things I suggested and see if they help.
These 5.0 mills are pretty famous by now for sucking through gas pretty fast for the first 10,000 miles. I would average 12-14 in the city and 17-20 on the highway for the first 7,000 or so. Now, at 24,000 miles, it's about 18-20 in the city and 25-29 on the highway. It'll also go up as you get more used to driving the car.

93 or 87 octane gas?
Mine is 4 days since delivery and about 240 miles on it and the readout is sitting on 17.2 mpg right now so it must not be just a new car thing...

Yeah; welcome to city driving the 5.0. As I've posted around here before, I get 13-16 mpg in city/suburb driving here in DC with mine (3.31 gears).
It jumps up to 25-26 on the highway, as rated, so there's nothing wrong with the car. Lots of short trips, with constant stop & go just isn't a good recipe for mpg.
