2012 TPMS retro fit question

No doubt as to this being a noob question, but my local Ford dealer could not answer it.

I have the factory stock 2012 split 5 spoke OEM 17” wheel shown below. Does anyone know if my 2012 TPMS wheel sensors will fit and function correctly if I swap them over to the earlier 5 spoke funnel 2005-09 OEM 17” mustang wheel shown below? Thanks for any insight in advance!

Current wheel:

The sensors are valve stem mounted so as long as there is space enough for them on the inside of the wheel they will work.

Thanks Ltngdrvr.

I’ve been holding off on purchasing the wheels until I know for sure that my 2012 TPMS sensors or some other TPMS will work. As I don’t want to get stuck with wheels I can’t use and/or end up with a flashing TPMS dash light. My dealer refuses to disable the TPMS dash light when I asked about doing it when installing the Ford racing wheels. (my first choice, link below) For what ever reason the Ford racing wheels are non-TPMS compatiable and the FRPP tech support folks couldn’t tell me why.

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=7868

Perhaps it’s a bit early in OEM what-fits-what wheel / TPMS compatibility scene or earlier wheel swaps are just not meant to be?

The valve type TPMS will work, however, you'll probably have the reprogram them to sync.

I'm pretty sure that the valve stem mounted TPMS would work even with that wheel, they will work with most wheels.

You would only need to get them sync'd if they aren't oem sensors.

As long as they physically fit inside the rim, they should work. Mine did when changing my rear wheels for wider ones.

I think the TPMS issue with those Ford racing wheels is for the band style sensors, the wheels have to have a flat area down the center of the rim for the sensor to lay flat against and the band to fit around.

Yes, i had a set of these exact wheels, on my 2010 for winter tires. (left over from my '06)
The '10-'13 TPMS valve type sensors fit and work perfectly and no need to reprogram them either

you can reuse the sensors from your car but you'll need a new set of valve stems because they can't be removed without destroying them, could pick up a set on ebay cheap

Thanks for all the helpful replies. You guys know your Mustangs!

I had just about given up after my Ford dealer and FRPP were unable to answer my question.

Cinque35, you posted a great reply w/pics that has given me the confidence to move forward with my wheel project. Nice to know from your first hand experience that my stock 2012 sensors can be reused and all I’ll need is new valve stems.

Ltngdrvr, I think your right about the band type sensors, think I’ll pass on the Ford racing wheels and go with the OEM wheels.

Used take offs seem to be a good buy compared to new wheel dealer pricing as in this example:

^ this. the 17x8 bullitt style ford racing are the same as the stock '05-'09.
the ones i had were actually ford racing cause they were silver and at the time i bought them the stocks only came in gray.. in '07 the stocks changed over to silver and now you can get them pretty cheap, so take-offs or ford racing doesn't really matter, just go on best price. what's good about the '12 TPMS sensors is they'll work on almost any wheel out there

Not accurate. I've had to sync-up OEM TPMS... so have others... Sometimes they Sync, sometimes they need a little persuasion...

That's the tool that I used... had to drive about 20 continous miles before the light came on. It's obvious that some have had to sync, and some don't...

Silly to buy the tool though for only using it once or maybe twice. Any good tire shop should have the tool and do the operation for you pretty cheap.

I've actually used it 4 times. When I purchased the TPMS Calibration Tool it cost $18.00 at Tously Ford. If you're swapping out wheels and tires with TPMSs, then it's silly not to have it... Why would you want the inconvenience and cost associated with syncing your sensors if you can do it yourself in 30 seconds? Maybe you like to have others work on your car, which is fine, I prefer to do it myself. To say a tool is silly because you only use it a few times makes no sense... I find it kind of ironic that you provide a link in your signature that highlights TPMSs and the use of a reset tool… http://v6mustangperformance.com/tire...oring-sensors/

exactly.. msrp was $18 in '08, i paid $15, and i use it plenty of times. just not on mine

these actually came free with some models until '10 when they updated the smart junction box to recognize new sensors w/o it, and it will work on 10+ if the for some reason they don't sync. tire shops will charge you more than that just to drive your car onto the lift

$18 plus shipping, right? Doesn't matter though. If you get the tires mounted at a tire shop(I don't mount my own tires on the wheels, do you?) they can sync the sensors IF it is needed but you shouldn't need to.

And that link is not in my signature, just a link to the V6 Mustang Performance website. Plus the author of that article that YOU posted the link to was not aware that for MOST that the sync tool is not needed when using oem sensors. If you read the associated install article, he states that the sync tool is not needed for oem sensors.

Actually, Tously shipped it for free... so just $18.00... LOL. Thanks for the laughs. You are entertaining, but I'm moving on...
