My 2011 auto does this. OP, do you know about engineering mode ?
Hold reset when you start it up. When it says engineering test mode you release reset. It will do a guage test and your speedo and rpm needles will go wonky. Then you use input to cycle through until you get to the digital speedo.

I think the dealers use it for trouble shooting.

this may be an old thread, but I have a question related to this. I have a 2013 and I've seen this behavior where my gauges all turn red when I hit red line.
Now however it seems a rev limiter has been turned on at 6800 RPM (Turned on the engineer mode) so I can't hit the red line. The down side to this is I can only get to about 58 MPH so I have to shift in to 3rd just to do a 0-60.
The only time the car was out of my site since I got it was taking it to the dealer for it's first oil change. Would they have re-chipped it to turn that rev limiter on? If the red line is 7000, why would they have set it under that. Is there a new red line?

The electronic throttle begins closing before redline, there is a soft limiter which I believe is at 6800 rpm and then the hard limiter at 7k when the motor ceases to function. Maybe that is what you are feeling?
I have hit the hard limiter once mistiming the 1-2 shift but never run the motor up just to see at what speed that it would be.

For the tachometer to turn red you have to have My Color, which comes on Premiums only, correct? In other words if you have a base V6 or a base GT you won't have this feature I'm guessing...

I've got a GT premium and I have seen the red lights turn on before. They don't now. I've put the car in engineering mode and while looking at the digital tack slowly get the rpm up to the limiter, once there I can floor it and the tack dances around 6800 rpm. Never gets to 7k and the lights do not turn on.
What do you mean a soft limiter?
